Do Belichick and Brady expose astrology as a non-science?

Given the way the NFL structures draft choices to spread the talent around and the record Belichek and Brady have established, I have to wonder whether the NFL is a matter of a QB, player evaluation, and coaching. If that is true for the NFL, what is different about college? What do the star worshippers have to say?

One thing Belicheat has mastered is taking other teams castoffs or over the hill players and making them productive.

I've never seen a coach be able to get a bunch of dudes to play so well together as a team as Belichick.

I love how they're hated and continue to win. I want us to be that way.

It's both. Also I don't think you are giving enough credit to the organizational structure as a whole. In NE you don;t have a meddling owner who wants to be coach and GM (see Dallas). They hire people to do their job and if they don;t do said job, they are gone. Belichek was a defensive wiz for a long time, but even they could see that after a while he could not just take any castoff and make them a star. It still happens occasionally but not nearly as often as it did in the past, especially on defense. They also manage their roster better than anyone. They understood that defense became difficult to play at a high level and went more to the offense (helped to have Brady).

With all that said there is one thing that Belichek still does. On a weekly basis, he changes up what his own team does to counteract his opponent's strengths. I understand the "do what we do" mantra and not worry about them, but there is nothing more awesome to watch than to see a team taken out of what they do best b/c the opponent took them away. Way too many coached teams in many sports on many levels look the exact same every game Wash, Rinse, Repeat.

I agree with almost everything you say, but aren't you talking coaching? Does great coaching make up for a talent deficit (at least if you have a great qb)? Does that translate to college? Is Belichek/Brady a once in a millennium situation, and thus to be discounted? Or, posed a little differently, if Belichek coached in college, could he win it all with a top QB and, say, only top fifteen classes?

The answer to your last question is yes, he could win with a top QB and a top 15 class. What is a top 15 class. Well lately that is say a Washington at the low end and say a LSU, OU class towards the middle. so I think he could develop enough to win. And I base that b/c the NFL is the ultimate in parity. Hard salary cap, and must spend most of it. Equal access to free agents mostly, all facilities are good, etc. etc. The difference is organization/coaching which you can control and injuries, etc. that you can;t control.

It's more of a money thing. They have figured out that paying a college kid a zillion dollars doesnt make sense and their are better bargains in the lower rounds of the draft, in cut players especially ones who were hurt or whatever and cut just for roster reasons, talented but troubled projects, tweeners, etc.

Could have made this a lot easier, AR.

Are the Pats lucky bastards or what?
