We know Trask will be the starter for the near future. Helluva job in the comeback victory. !!
Was Mullen like Chump? Sticking to his starting QB even when he seemed to have hit his plateau and was a mild head case (a la Driskel) granted Trask was always getting hurt so maybe that forced Mullen to keep with Franks, anyway, he's out, Trask is in, these are some of the things I see.
Trask in his limited playing time is obviously able to go through his progressions much faster. The big question will be how he holds up under pressure. If we can survive the next couple of games getting him acclimated to pressure, I think we'll see the offense start to be more productive. He has the quick release, our strength as a team (maybe our only one) is the WR, Mullen will have to use them. As we saw when Trask came in and fired off 5 quick passes, this will help the running game, (if the Oline can ever get some push).
One of the things that I liked last year about Mullen, was he game planned around the strengths of the players, vs the opponent, which helped us have a great year, this year he seems to pushing his typical offensive scheme and we are struggling. He needs to turn to page 3 & 4 of the playbook. It is possible that he knew Franks limits and tried to keep him from doing too much.
We all have been wondering why EJ hasn't taken more snaps... we saw the other game that he needs more game experience, he was pretty raw. I think Mullen will put together a couple of packages every game going forward and EJ will see the field. Knowing Trask's knack of getting hurt, he has to prepare EJ starting now to take over at any moment.
Not happy Franks got hurt, wish him a full recovery and good luck in the draft (please don't take the medical RS and come back next year) but I am excited for the change at QB as I felt that we had seen Franks hit the wall in his progress and we knew there would be those bonehead plays each game. Maybe now that Mullen is forced to use Trask, he will open up the passing game. Yes we will see an INT every now and then as Trask doesn't have the experience at reading the defense, but we already had that with Franks, let's start taking more shots down the field, crossing routes, using the TE's, passing the ball beyond the LOS, throwing past the 1st down marker on 3rd, using the middle of the field, etc. score some points!!
My final observation, Trask is the kind of guy that SOS would throw in the game and lead us to an SEC title. Time for Mullen to start earning that 6M a year.
