wut? first round?

That’s what some people are saying, even the linked article in the OP. Also says he may battle with Haskins as the first QB taken. If that happens (being 1st QB taken) I’d imagine that would most likely occur in the first 5 picks of Rd. 1. Baker having a good year for the Browns also helps Murray, IMO. Shows teams that mini URGs’ (some at least) can play at a high level. Some team would most likely take a chance and use a high pick to do so.

Mayfield’s combine height was 6’1. There’s a big difference between that and 5’9.

Dan McGwire thinks so too.

I always pictured you as a short, balding man.

You’ve seen a picture of him. You don’t remember when he received his gator chatter shirt and he started a thread about it? I think he was the first guy to get a gator chatter shirt.

Drew Brees is a little over 6'0", nice try. Same size as Steve Young.

Russell Wilson is the only short-esque QB who has ever been successful (5'10.5"), and he's Peyton Manning compared to this turd Murray, who is between 5'2" and 5'4". The kid is Danny Devito in cleats.

Ox is laying the smack down. Danny Devito in cleats....

Smart move. NFL contract will come with a large signing bonus (most likely much larger than his MLB bonus) and more guaranteed money for the duration of the first contract. If he’s a mid first rounder or better, he’s probably looking at $15m guaranteed minimum and maybe upward of $32m over the first 4-5 years. MLB will pay him a bonus of what...maybe $7m if he’s lucky and then he’s stuck in the farm system for an undetermined length of time. If he doesn’t make it to the bigs, the bonus is really all he has to show for it. Also, the longer it takes to make the bigs, the longer he has to wait before he’s eligible to sign a new contract for big money. He’ll be playing for maybe $300k per year for the first 5 or so years. MLB contract rules treat these guys almost like indentured servants for their first several years, that’s just the way it works.

Also, if football doesn’t work out in 3-4 years baseball will still be there. I don’t think the opposite is true.

This. It's about total amount guaranteed up front. There's a small chance he makes it to the bigs and gets that huge payday. What gives him the most money...one shot. Baseball is full of studs hat never see the big show and never cash in on big time money. Even in baseball they own you for years before arbitration and free agency.

I would disagree. I do think the opposite is more likely. There are a few examples of guys who played baseball first, failed and went back to football. Weinke is one that comes to mind. I can't think of many cases where they played football for a while, failed and went to baseball. Tebow is an outlier as there just aren't many 28 year old minor league baseball players. Baseball values youth and executives probably already see Murray as behind in baseball development as it relates to his age.

The combine should reveal the truth about Murray as it relates to height, weight, hand size and all those things NFL experts claim are important. I saw Russell Wilson play minor league baseball the summer prior to his last season of college football and while he is not 6' tall he has a football built, thick and strong. Murray does not appear to be as muscular as Wilson. I just can't imagine a guy that small being able to take the physical pounding of a scrambling NFL quarterback.

I heard a couple of different points of view. One is that the A's drafted him too highly and his potential in MLB is lower than anticipated. One is that declaring for the NFL is a ploy to increase his contract for baseball. One is from a notable player that said something like play baseball and never look back.

Only time will tell which way it ends up.
