So now that the season is over, except for the bowl, and we are collectively calming down a bit from the excitement from that very satisfying win over FSU. Recruiting is about to hit the early signing period stretch, but we have a bit of time to think back over the season.
1. I said in the off season, if UF did not win 10 games with its roster against this schedule, UF had not hired the right guy for the job again. UF sits at 9-3 today and maybe UF will pick up that 10th win in a bowl. So to that extent the season did not reveal a bad hire.
2. UF got a much needed win against FSU and I am sure everyone is at least as satisfied with that win as I am. Of course as time goes on it will be tempered over time by the fact that this is an historically bad FSU team. Of course losing to an historically bad FSU team would have been a disaster, making this an important satisfying win.
3. A big part of the reason for my 10 win analysis was that I saw UF's schedule this year as pretty weak. In reality it turned out to be historically weak. FSU and UTn were awful. UK was a bit better than usual, but other than that every other team was about what they were expected to be. Really given this schedule, UF probably should have won 11 games.
4. After a slow start the offense made progress to respectability getting over the 4800 yards in 12 games that I set as standard to measure against. I guess I should temper my long run expectations of the offense yardage output with the understanding is more run based and thus will not get as many yards as a similarly efficient passing offense. Still I think the offense made good progress this season, but still there is the lingering issue of finding a QB. Otherwise, RB, WR, TE and OL all seemed to progress if unevenly during the season and looked competent.
5. As far as the QB issue, against FSU Franks has a play some times two plays in a row where the light seemingly had come on finally. Then he would revert and have another awful play or two. As I said in point 3 it appears the offensive just needs a competent QB to be a very good offense.
6. Defensively, I am not sure this style is the best for a place where you can get top shelf talent. I think UF could play what I think might be a bit sounder style of defense. The defense regressed a bit as predicted, but was not terrible.
7. Finally it was nice that UF was able to replace both kickers so well. Special teams stepped forward a bit in general as UF returned a punt for a TD and the new kickoff return fair catch rule helped UF not look as embarrassingly bad as in the past couple of years.
8. There were no major in game coaching meltdowns, so the in game coaching was decent.
So overall UF made some progress this year compared to the last 3. UF still lost AT HOME to UK and UMo. That is unacceptable. The only real solid win was LSU at home, maybe Miss State on the road. It was not a disasterous first year for a coach, but it was not a stellar first year either.
