Youd think this guy has stock in 3-3-5.com.
Lol, there is no 3-3-5.com. I checked.
This. I like that the OP brought up a different topic to discuss. He even tried to make some arguments for it. But, as
@ltraz said, "there are reasons so few people run a 3-3." When's the last time a team won a natty running a 3-3-5? I can see the reason for a 3-3-5 in the Mountain West for the Lil 12. But, what would the the purpose in running it in the SEC?
I think it is recruiting for two reasons. Jesse's and Joe's > X' and O's and at the end of the day you are going to have Kirby and Saban telling recruits they run an NFL defense. If you can't say that, then you aren't going to be competitive in recruiting. If NFL teams aren't doing it, then you can't really sell it to recruits.
The other reason is also recruiting, but for a different reason. No teams on the east coast run this defense that I am aware of. So if you want to hire a guru who can run the 3-3-5, then you have to hire a west coast guy with zero southeast recruiting connections.
I think the data supports the defense's effectiveness, but we'd fall further behind Bama and UGA if we hired someone with 0 southeast recruiting connections to run a defense that NFL teams don't run. We are the kind of school that wants to compete for the top recruits, so that means it is a no go for a place like UF.
