If we expand to 8 it's gotta be top 8, no auto slots for conf champs. What if NW beats tOSU or Pitt beat Clemson? Would they deserve to play for NC? NO. In any case, expansion is yrs down the road. Current format and ESPN contract for it is good into the next decade.

No they wouldn’t, but in that situation, neither would Clemson or tOSU...and therein lies the problem with the playoff (even more so with 8 teams rather than 4).

But crappy conference champs don’t automatically make it now with 4 teams so the problem you perceive doesn’t exist. Just look this year at Ohio State, Washington & UCF. Go to 8 and you’ll have the problem you said you don’t want to have.

This. We're afraid of something that has almost never happened. And in doing so, we're actually actively encouraging that very thing to happen.

The committee spent hours debating which of OhSt, OU or uga deserved to get in. But the hilarious part is that they knew full well that Ou wouldn't hang with Alabama, couldn't stomach seeing OhSt in given their body of work, and had just watched uga take a shot and fail. Based on the rules, they had to put someone in. But in many respects, their "decision" in itself showed why even four teams isn't necessary more often than not. They unknowingly hurt their own relevance by saying it was a tough call between 3 teams, none of whom were going to beat #1.

F the playoffs! I really didn’t mind the MNC system. Impress with ur body if work. Get voted #1. I liked when bowl games mattered.
I was even okay with having the top two play for it all. That system worked pretty well for us. Win the SEC play for the NC.
