I'm seeing Mullen worship in multiple threads. Here's his SEC record:

2009 3–5 4th (West)
2010 4–4 5th (West)
2011 2–6 5th (West)
2012 4–4 4th (West)
2013 3–5 T–5th (West)

Really the only thing one can say about Mullen is that he is better than Sly Croom, though Sly Croom also went 4-4 and won SEC Coach of the Year.

Some of you keep claiming you can't win at Cowbell and Cowbell has sucked forever, which is not close to being historically accurate. Cowbell's best coach won and won often.

Jackie Sherrill's SEC record
1991 Mississippi State 4–3 T–4th
1992 Mississippi State 4–4 3rd
1993 Mississippi State 3–4–1 4th
1994 Mississippi State 5–3 2nd
1995 Mississippi State 1–7 4th
1996 Mississippi State 3–5 4th
1997 Mississippi State 4–4 T–3rd
1998 Mississippi State 6–2 1st
1999 Mississippi State 6–2 2nd
2000 Mississippi State 4–4 T–3rd
2001 Mississippi State 2–6 6th
2002 Mississippi State 0–8 6th
2003 Mississippi State 1–7 6th

At least Mullen's a good OC right? Here's Cow Bell's offense rankings:

Total offense
2009 78th
2010 40th
2011 72
2012 73
2013 42

Hmmmmmm.... maybe not. I guess the old ND/Bob Davie QB-up-the-middle offense still sucks.

Here is Mullen's record broken down by other people:

5-0 vs. Kentucky
4-1 vs. Ole Miss
2-3 vs. Arkansas
1-4 vs. Auburn
0-2 vs. Texas A&M
0-5 vs. LSU
0-5 vs. Alabama
4-4 vs. the rest of the SEC East

Since 2011, the combined conference record of the SEC teams State has beaten is 8-64 (.111). There are nine SEC wins in that time frame, five of them coming from 0-8 teams.

Mullen is a dismal 2-21 against ranked teams since 2009. In those 23 games Mississippi State has scored 20-or-more points just six times; the Bulldogs allowed more than 20 points in 18 of those games.

Granted, these opponents are ranked for a reason. Losing is not part of the equation for many of the nation’s top teams, and most coaches have a sub-500 record against ranked opponents as a result. Mullen is far from alone in his struggles against ranked teams.

But Mississippi State has actually struggled more as Mullen’s tenure in Starkville has progressed.

The Bulldogs lost all 12 of their games against ranked teams over the last three years, and have lost 14 straight games to ranked teams dating back to 2010. Over the course of that losing streak, MSU has been outscored by a combined score of 467-213.

Well, some say he's really good at building a program and recruiting, right?

Is anyone impressed with that? It appears to be basically the same as Croom. The truth is that some of you jilted lovers are just trying to date your old girlfriend's short, fat, ugly little sister.

Not my first choice, but again, judging anyone solely on how they performed at a perennial SEC loser is extremely skewed. Spurrier was 35-21 at the pro level, and did well at Duke in his short stint there, but was nothing like what he became at UF. Nor has he had the same success at Usce.

Any move, if there is one, would be a bit of a risk. I don't think Mullen would be a bad hire.

Plus you were a big fan of the Muschamp hire, while I was not. So, you know...

If jimbo Fisher can win a championship at fsu, Dan Mullen could start a dynasty here.

TLDR, your opinion is held lower than almost anyone on the board so it's irrelevant what you think.

Not sure on Mullen he certainly didn't beat any good team there until this season but they do look pretty damn good this year.

Mississippi is not now, nor has it ever been, a hotbed of high school football talent. But to start building your program, you have to try and capture the best talent in your state. Mississippi and Ole Miss have the same problem and compete heavily with each other on this level. Then, you have to try and convince players from other places that coming to Mississippi is a good thing...and I think that is a tough sell with all the other places one could choose to go. The fact that either of them are having any success is a testament to the head coaches...not only are they getting better players, but they are coaching them up to be better than what they were before. Either of head coaches would be an upgrade for us.

I agree that prior to this year, Mullen at MSU has been average. However, if he somehow manages to navigate a brutally competitive SECw and get MSU into an SEC championship game, and given the state of the SECe, he'd likely win the SEC, well, that's a game changer in my opinion. It would also likely mean MSU is in the playoff for the national title. That, at Mississippi State, is remarkable and would catapult Mullen to the top of any desirable head coaching list. And his being 42 years old is also a significant positive.

Any coach who can turn Miss State into an SEC juggernaut in year 6 will likely be able to turn Florida back into Florida in considerably less time.

I don't care for Mullen and wouldn't even have him in my Top 5 (maybe not even top 10), but I'd take him in a heartbeat at this point.

That offense doesn't work unless you have a Heisman hopeful at QB.

Always put an asterisk next to SEC west because it's so tough there. Now he has a beast at QB let's see what Mullen can do as a coach. He helped the Gators win 2 national titles so I will always pull for him unless it's against the Gators. And if he had stayed at UF for the 2009 season who knows what the Gators and Tebow would have done.

Winning is all that matters. Everyone will only remember Mullen as the guy that got Miss St in the top 3

Mullen would be a substantial upgrade over the grease fire we have right now.

Mike Shula would be a substantial upgrade from what we have now.

Alvin Dork would be a substantial upgrade. Not really the point.

Mullen has a great quarterback in Dak Prescott who has the will to win. If Mullen was coaching UF this year he wouldn't be doing any better than Will Muschamp. Jeff Driskel ain't going to beat Alabama if Amos Alonzo Stagg was coaching him.

I think we missed Percy more than Mullen.

I agree with Law. Mullen hasn't done squat over there. We're just desperate for anything at this point...like closing time at the bar.

I think its cool now that black coaches like Tomlin can become retreads like the old days. Used to be they would hire an old coach over and over before a Tomlin got a chance..............Does Cignetti get some attention by the NFL. Anyone watching the Oklahoma game tonight
