It's crazy because supposedly it was one of the "fixed" ones.

Just to be clear, this has really soured me on Samsung phones. I may not get one again for a long time, if ever.

However, the new batteries they are using come from the same company that makes batteries for the iPhone.
Which now leads me to believe it may actually be something else and perhaps not the batteries themselves. We'll see I guess...unless that phone wasn't really a good replacement, was one with an original battery, and was allowed to slip in, which would be another, perhaps even bigger problem IMO.

Why? Samsung jumped on this problem quickly and took quick action. At no point, did they try to blame their customers for the problems that occurred.

If you decide you don't like Samsung, there are a lot of other Android phones in the marketplace -- in fact, Google itself has now introduced its own phone model. Your charger cords and such will still work and the basics of how to use the phone with be familiar.

With the goal of longer battery life the manufacturers are trying to pack more sh!t (amp-hours) into a smaller package. In doing this they are probably making thinner separators between the positive and negative plates in the battery. I suspect something in the OS is causing the batteries to run hotter thus breaking down the already thin separators shorting positive and negative plates which causes the fire. You can start a fire by putting an aluminum foil gum wrapper across the terminals of a 9 volt battery.

Have there been any similar issues with the galaxy edge 7? This is the one my daughter wants.

There was one claim (story) I believe of the S7, but not the edge, but I'm not sure that was confirmed, seems like we would have heard more about it of it was.
The S7 and S7 edge were made well before the Note 7. My wife has the S7 edge and doesn't have any problems with it. Doesn't even typically get warm.
It's a very high level phone though, probably one a teenager doesn't need, I know I wouldn't get it for my step daughter, I just don't believe kids need the newest technology though.

Now, que the Apple fan boys on why you shouldn't get it because it's garbage

As I understand it the S6 did away with the supplemental SD card but the S7 edge brought it back. If so, the S6 edge is out.

I didn't say anything about the S6

There is an S7 and an S7 edge, both accept a micro SD, the S7 edge having a couple of spec upgrades from the normal S7, but nothing major, outside of the curved edges.

I didn't say you did. Just what I had seen elsewhere.

        Various observations:

        - I'd probably go S7 vs S7 edge as the edge looks like it is iphone 6plus size.

        - The S7 appears to only of 32 gig of memory, plus of course you can expand it. For me 32 would be fine, but she blows up her 16gig Iphone 6 all the time. I understand you can load pics/movies on the SD card, but sounds like that isn't always the case with apps. She is very unorganized and I could see her filling up 32 gig with just apps. I almost wonder if the 64 gig with no SD of the S6 may be better for her.

        - I'm with AT&T - so you are looking at about $23 per month for the S7 for 30 months. An Iphone7 with 128 gig is $25 per month as a reference. An S6 is also just under $23/mo, but you can get a $200 best buy gift card.

        - On Amazon you can get S7's in the range of $540, which is significantly cheaper than the $690 on the monthly plans. The phones say unlocked / international version. What exactly does that mean, and why would I care?

I'm in no rush, I'll probably do this for Christmas for her, unless some great deal presents itself before hand.

Any thoughts are appreciated. I have always dealt with iphone products so never had to wade into all of these various issues.

It's actually not as big as the 6plus, at least as far as height. Samsung is better with the bezels than Apple is.
        https://www.cnet.com/news/samsung-g...-6s-iphone-6s-plus-lg-g5-and-google-nexus-6p/

This link lists the specs, including dimensions of the S7, S7 edge, iphone 6, iPhone 6plus, LG G5 and Nexus 6P.

The S7 edge actually splits down the middle the S7 and the iphone 6plus, so it's not as big as the iPhone 6plus.

There actually is more functionality in the edge over the regular S7 if you are between the two, and they are expanding the usage of the edge screen all the time. I suggest you go to a bestbuy or something and actually handle the two. The S7 edge doesn't feel that large, even though you get the larger screen.

Depends. Some apps don't allow moving to SD card. Others do, though with all the apps will always take up some space on the phone itself even when you can move them to sd card.
The S7 and S7 edge allow for up to 256GB of micro sd card. So there is plenty of room to transfer files to it, and android has a built in file handling app, but there are also others you can download as well, in order to maximize space.
You can get up to 64 GB micro sd cards on amazon for pretty cheap, 128GB and 256GB can still be pricey.

Are you looking through best buy? Often you can get deals through them, especially as phones age.
I wouldn't recomend the S6, but that's up to you.
I'm with sprint, and we can still do a 2 year contract with a subsidized price. I still do all my phones that way, because I can't beat the plan anywhere else and have no need to go anywhere else.

Ferg can speak more to this, this is his specialty. Unlocked, as I understand it, is free from any one carrier, but again, Ferg knows more about that stuff than I.

Also, if ATT is getting the Google Pixel, you may want to look into that as well. From what I read, they aren't going to have carrier bloatware.

Not that I've heard of. However, I'm not a fan of Samsung bloatware, though I do have a few Samsung tablets.

Moto Z or X are one of the best performance, reliability, and pricewise right now. They are trying to buy back marketshare.

It's the conservative thing to do. These aren't Obamaphones that you are buying with Other People's Money.

Did some research on the Google Pixel and Pixel XL.
Looks like a solid phone, but also looks like it will be a ***** to get.
Verizon is the only carrier selling them right now, but according to cnet, all you need is a sim card from your previous device, and the pixel will work on any carrier
        https://www.cnet.com/news/want-a-google-pixel-but-not-sure-where-to-buy-one/

Problem being, google store is the only place to get them without being forced into a verizon contract. And it appears to be currently out of stock through google, which I hear has been a problem with the nexus phones as well.

What I don't like is that it too does not have expandable storage, just like the iPhone. Second, it comes with either 32GBs or 128GBs, no option for 64GBs.
There is a financing option through google though, or you pay full price, but again, all are currently out of stock.
        https://store.google.com/config/pix..._medium=MS&utm_campaign=pixel_phone_Config_BN

Probably a decent product if you can find one, and supposedly makes it easy to transition out of the iPhone.

Something to consider L-boy, though finding one, unless someone is already on Verizon, may be a hassle.
