'Game of Thrones' Final Season Winterfell War: Who Will Die? — The Hollywood Reporter
Game of Thrones' Final Season Winterfell War: Who Will Die?
The Hollywood Reporter predicts 13 heroes who will die in the final season's third episode.
[This story contains spoilers for season eight, episode two of HBO's
Game of Thrones, "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms."]
"We're all going to die. At least we die together!" Leave it to
Tormund Giantsbane (Kristofer Hivju) to offer up some positivity in a time of great peril. He's right, of course: death is very much on its way, in the form of the Night King and his Army of the Dead. The White Walkers have reached Winterfell as of "
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms," and as such, several Game of Thrones heroes are about to fight their last fight. Stock up on your tissue supply accordingly.
So, the obvious question: who's going to live? More to the point: who's going to die? "I think we might live,"
Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) said at one point in this past episode, and he, like Tormund, is also right — for some folks, anyway. We're not going to lose
Jon Snow (Kit Harington) or
Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) during the final season's midpoint. Tyrion and his brother
Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) won't die without some further reckoning with
Cersei (Lena Headey), who is also safe, thanks to her current position in King's Landing. The rest of the cast, however? Up for grabs. Here are the main characters we think will die in the big battle at Winterfell:

1.
Grey Worm (Jacob Anderson). The Unsullied commander is on the front lines of the war. His death at the hands of the wights is as likely as anyone's. Further sealing the deal: his scene in "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms" with…
2. Missandei (Nathalie Emmanuel). Her conversation with Grey Worm about retreating to Naath after the battle was as clear a sign of their impending demise as it gets. Sure, one of them may survive while the other perishes. If it's one over the other, it's Grey Worm. Sadly, we think it's both.
3.
Jorah Mormont (Iain Glen). The Captain of the Targaryen Queensguard is currently the proud new owner of a Valyrian sword. That won't be enough to stop him from falling at the hands of the dead. Jorah with Heartsbane in hand will enjoy some tremendous action, but the Bear Islander will not make it out of the evening unscathed.

4. The Crypt Keeper. No, not
that one. The little girl whom Davos Seaworth (Liam Cunningham) and Gilly (Hannah Murray) convinced to retreat to the Winterfell crypts. For a good little while now, a popular theory has posited the Night King raising the bones of dead Starks (Ned and Lyanna included) in the crypts. Everyone hiding out down there is in big trouble, and will very likely pass away, this poor brave child included. Sadly, it also includes…
5. Gilly and Baby Sam. I predicted their survival ahead of the season, but when I say everyone in the crypt is going to die, I really mean it.
6.
Varys (Conleth Hill). The Spider will crawl no more after next week's episode, for reasons I outlined
here. Bonus prediction: Varys will be responsible for helping Tyrion escape from the crypt with his life intact. That's how he protects the realm — by protecting the realm's most brilliant brain.

7. Dolorous Edd (Ben Crompton). One of the last men of the Night's Watch still standing. The acting Lord Commander will see his watch ended at the Battle of Winterfell.
8. Ghost. Good news! The direwolf returned in "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms," albeit in blink-and-you'll-miss-it fashion. Bad news! We blinked, and soon, he's about to be gone.
9. Podrick Payne (Daniel Portman). Good enough fighter. Lovely singing voice. Not enough to keep him alive.

10.
Ser Brienne of Tarth (Gwendoline Christie). On the bright side, she's now a knight of the Seven Kingdoms, a title she earned in
one of the single happiest scenes in Thrones history. It's a perfect setup for one of the deadliest deaths in Thrones history.
11.
Beric Dondarrion (Richard Dormer). The Lightning Lord will give up his last life in the fight with the dead. If you're unfamiliar with my wild swing of a theory about Beric giving up his life to save the Hound (Rory McCann), brush up on it
here. The two brothers without banners were last seen together in "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms," and are seen together again in the trailer for season eight episode three. Will the far-fetched prediction come to pass? One week until we find out!
12.
Theon Greyjoy (Alfie Allen). It's time. The Iron Islander volunteered for guard duty to defend the Three-Eyed Raven from the Night King. There's zero chance he makes it out alive.
13.
Bran Stark (Isaac Hempstead Wright). But death won't come so easily for the former Lord Stark. Yes, the Three-Eyed Raven's physical form will pass, but we expect his spirit will live on beyond his death at the hands of the Night King — either in dragon form, or through the vast expanse of weirwood trees throughout Westeros.
