I haven't read all the threads and the posts regarding Mac's firing, so I'm just going to add my two cents worth of thoughts.
After his introductory press conference, Mac was characterized as "a used car salesman." Looking back, I think that was a very accurate and predictive description.
While his "aww-shucks" personality might have been appealing to players and their families, it was obviously all a facade as to his true character. By widespread reports, he really wasn't liked in the UAA office, and not just because of his comments about the UF facilities and priorities.
Listening to Stricklin's press conference, and the response that generated the "more than just wins and losses" comment, it is apparent to me that the big-wigs in the UAA were dissatisfied with Mac for quite a while, but Mac's death threat fiasco was the final straw.
Simply, Mac was a liar. He lied about his offense, and the infamous characterization of winning with his dog. He was stubborn about making changes to improve the offense, to the point of shunning Spurrier's input - which is akin to spitting in the pope's face. Then there's the suspensions, the NEB gear photos,.......
He was in over his head here at UF, ultimately unqualified and unable to take the pressure of the job when it was obvious to everyone that THE reason he was brought here - "We haven't been good on O and I get it" - was never going to pay off. And I believe (and the continuing failures on the field creates my conviction)that Mac knew all year that it just wasn't a good fit. That is why that Mac & UF have "mutually agreed to part ways," which is not technically a firing - Mac agreed that it was best for him to go.
Good riddance.
