Lawson Hollland, TE coach under Spurrier, died this week. God receive him and bless his family & friends. I met him once.
It was the post-season Polk County Gator Club meeting in early 1998. SOS had promised to sign a game ball for anyone who had been at the 1997 #1 f$u game, where we derailed their NC hopes.
I won a “game ball” with the score
on it in a raffle at the start of the meeting. When the time came, I got in line to get his signature, which he did with a personal inscription. I tried to get him to toss it back to me but he wouldn’t.
I then took it to a table where several assistant coaches sat to get their signatures. I told Lawson Holland that “Coach must think I’m a tight end.” “Why?” he asked. “I tried to get him to throw it to me and he wouldn’t.” They all busted into laughter.
