It is definitely designed to work in conjunction with NFL, not to compete against it as the XFL seeks to do. Obviously not scheduling head-to-head is sign, as well as the fact that AAF players can leave for the NFL at any time with no penalty.

I can tell you that this is 100% the case. I had a chance to hear the head of the Apollos speak about the league back during the College Football season. The goal is to give borderline (used loosely for some) players a shot at showing the NFL what they can do while keeping veterans on the field since there really isn't much, except a good agent, for a player to show that they can still play and should be signed when there are injuries or other openings in the NFL. On the other hand, those old backup QBs (like Mark Brunell seemed to be for 100 years) might be watching this one closely as now there are players, like Garrett Gilbert that can probably provide better on field depth even though they might not be as seasoned.
