Will Muschamp’s strategy to recruiting at South Carolina runs much deeper than his “#SpursUp” Twitter shtick.
In fact, it represents a big change from the way things were done over the previous decade under the Steve Spurrier regime.
Muschamp revealed some of the details to ESPN.com’s Tom Luginbill recently.
Here are a couple of important areas of change in what Luginbill termed “a complete culture shift, a 180-degree turn in approach” for South Carolina recruiting:

- New target areas: Spurrier staff focused much of its efforts on recruiting in Florida, specifically in the Tampa and Jacksonville areas. That makes sense ,given the Head Ball Coach’s background of success in the state and the Sunshine State’s wealth of talent. Muschamp instead wants to put an increased emphasis on South Florida, in addition to making the state of North Carolina a new priority. Virginia is another state that could see some increased activity from the Gamecocks, according to the report.
- Evaluation hierarchy: Muschamp wants to be the one to issue an offer to a recruit, but it appears as though he won’t be doing so until things run through the proper channels. The director of player personnel will be in charge of reviewing film of a player to help save time for coaches. Any worthy tape will be given to a positional coach, who will review players at his position both in his recruiting area and outside of his specific recruiting area. That will create an opportunity for two coaches to overlap on the same recruit– the coach whose area the player resides and also the player’s potential positional coach. Tape of players that make it through that process will be review by both coordinator and head coach.
Time will tell if these changes are for the better.
