If a coach knows he's leaving, he's not going to keep recruiting unless he plans to then flip the kid to his new school - which as we've seen with WM, is a real possibility. But in any job, once you know you're leaving, your performance (recruiting, in this case) drops off without your heart in it and the best move is a quick clean break to start ASAP on your next opportunity. You raise a valid point on the coaches leaving AL, and I don't have the facts on how hard they were still recruiting for the program up to when they left. It just defies logic for people to put in effort on something if they know they are leaving, but I accept it happens..

I could see this happening:

Mac: Foley I've got a wonderful RB coach cued up and ready to go.
Foley: Great lets make the hire.

Mac: Hey lets make this happen.
Lubick: I'm all in.

Mac How much do you need to make this happen?
Lubick: $XX, but I want to wait until my last game before you make the announcement.
Mac: Great. At the presser I will tell people that I have a coach, but keep your name out of it.
Lubick: Deal.

Mac (at the presser): I am proud to represent the Gator Nation. I have a RB coach who will impress everybody, but I will reveal that name later.

Mac: Jeremy, Its a done deal. I just need to draw up the contract for $XX.
Foley: Well this year he was making 75% of $XX. Cant we pay him 80% of $XX?
Mac: I will see if there is any wiggle room.

Mac Is there any wiggle room?
Lubick: I thought things were cool. I thought we had an agreement.
Oregon: We will pay you 120% of $XX
Lubick: I am sorry Mac, I am going to have to pass.

I think in your scenario, Lubick backed out of the deal because he is a WR coach and we were trying to make him a RB coach.

JMac and Lubick work out a deal.

Lubick goes to tell ORE he's leaving.

They counter with more money, and either Foley can't match it or simply won't based on avoiding a bidding war,

JMac is back to looking for his next option.

yeah, Vitel doesn't invest his own personal credibility on rumors ~ even rumors from reliable sources. That is a pretty good policy to go by.
