Gator Basketball ***Official Game Thread BBALL***#14 Florida @ UGA

I have said that Condo has not played well offensively all year, but I think something is going on mentally with him. He just seems lost on offense but could be he is really playing out of position. At least he has stopped jacking up 3's, but even around the basket he seems to have no feel and really missed some close in shots badly. And as you said he was attempting to make passes in this game that were not there, And he is not a threat on the offensive boards b/c he typically is not near the basket, which is not his fault, when a shot goes up.

With that said, any road win in conference is a good win. They are not easy to get.
He's averaging 13 pts, 8 boards and 4 assists per game, all of which are 2nd on the team. He leads the team in blocks; his assist to TO ratio is 3rd behind only the guards; and his offensive boards rate is 3rd behind Chin and Micah. He's shooting 52% from the floor despite his poor 3 shooting, which means he's shooting 61% on 2's. He was 6-8 from the field in last night's game, but no feel, right...

People were complaining about his offense early in the season when he was was #2 on the team. Hes been far more consistent than people give him credit for. It’s easy to focus on the missed threes. The turnovers have to change though. Seven in one game is not going to win games after the round of 32.

Golden has this team well situated in their roles and they are getting better every game playing in those roles. They can sustain an off night from Tommy in a way they absolutely could not at the beginning of the year. Terrific work from Todd in getting things situated and building towards March.

I see alot of teams try to play dirty with our guys and hurt our guys intentionally or try to get into fights to get our guys suspended.

I like that other teams playing physical/dirty doesn't knock us off our game.

Now, I'll stop and appreciate all the team (and coach) did right last night, which should not be overlooked. Always good to beat a rival, especially one we hate as much as White and the Dwags. I still don't have my head around why our bigs weren't producing more, but am pleasantly suprised with the guards finding their 3pt range. We need balance, anyone can have a bad night and the others have to pick up the slack. Early in the season, as noted, we couldn't afford an off night by Haugh. Now, we can likely survive an off night by any 1-2 players (see Haugh with 1pt first half against aTm, and 0fer a lot early on in this game, see 7 TO by Condon, etc). By tournament time, we should have worked out all the 'bad nights' for individuals and be operating with all available options. We'll need it.

What struck me about this game, and why I quoted JBoss about 'physical' play or trying to hurt an opponent, is this Cyril fella. Yes, he was playing physical and dirty, but the first moment Brown entered the game he gives that kidney hit in the block. Refs came back later and called regular foul, but I agree with the announceres - uncalled for and uneccessary - should have been an F1. Then late in the second half, Brown is again under our basket and as he goes for the rebound he catches Cyril in the throat, putting him on the bench for the next several minutes. I wanted to say 'he didnt see Cyril' and that he was just going for the rebound, but replays showed his arm went up and at the throat, not a motion needed for the rebound. Don't know if Todd coaches them that way, or Brown just decided to do these things on his own, but he will get himself in trouble if he keeps it up, maybe even hurt the team if he is on the bench when we need him. Only comparison I can make is Handlogten. He goes in and my son and I take bets on who is getting fouled - intentional or not, Handlogten is an enforcer that clobbers folks. But I distinctly watched how Brown fouled, tried to hurt, Cyril and I was not pleased. Yes, FK all dwags, but there is no need for that, especially in a game we are up by double digits most of the way.

Typical Mike White. I can't remember what call he challenged but there's just 43 seconds left in the game while down by 17.

You mean the “successful” challenge where the ball was last touched by Condon?… only because he was fouled and it wasn’t called? Again?

Edit: might’ve been Haugh.

He's painful to watch even as the opponent. Poor puckered Mike. His style of play is only surpassed by his averageness. That challenge was annoying AF.

Golden's record against Georgia is becoming Spurrier-esque.

I’m gonna totally disagree. I love the physicality he brought off the bench. None of those were dirty…just physical basketball and that flopping, pussy dwag can sit his crybaby ass on the bench if he can’t handle it.

Never seen a big guy fall down so many times, while trying to draw fouls from smaller players. Wasn't Cyril the guy who got ejected when we played in G'ville for a flagrant 2 foul? Put the big boy pants on and play ball.

Yep. Chinyelu wears on folks and most cave either mentally or physically. The dwag went both ways.

I am with MJM and others on this. I do think that Brown's foul could and should have been a F1, but I don't see that it was intentional. Brown was trying to block a bigger, more physical player off the boards and he got his arm up into Cyril's shoulder/neck. It is also true that I have little respect for Cyril. From early on he was flopping and trying to get fouls on Gators. When a guy is whining and crying like Cyril, there is a strong temptation to give him something legitimate to cry about.

Jay, being the Swami of All Sports but particularly hoops at this time of the year, has hit the nail on the head about our Gators. Being able to take up the slack for the guy/guys who are either off or covered up by the opposition is the recipe for the emergence they’ve had this second half of the season. I suppose the trick will be when they play a team that can match them 5 to 5.

Tommy Haugh was not quite on his game and Chin didn’t have his normal output offensively but Condon was good as was brown off the bench. Flan and Lee, as mentioned, had great games and picked up the scoring slack. Lee was impressive shooting from long range, what he was noted for but hadn’t quite lived up to. Maybe his light has come on? Regardless, these guys are meshing and playing great team ball right now with their 8 player rotation. Keep the motor running, stay out of foul trouble and above all, stay healthy! The remainder of the regular season, of course, comes first but the post season should be can’t miss viewing. One of the best things I’ve read about the team was the article, I think referenced earlier in the thread, that stated how intense the team was with their hard and consistent play for the duration of the game. That’s quite a compliment to both players and coaches. It would be great if a similar article can be penned post-season.

* Five guys in double figs. led by Lee and Fland, Condon was pretty solid with 12 pts 5 rbs and several blocks…he’s playing solid D, Chin with 20 rbs, Brown with 12 pts off the bench…not too shabby.

* The Wilkinson kid for White Mike and the Dawgs…I don’t believe it would have made a whole lot of difference if he’d have been healthy and played.

* We can bytch about the officials, and deservedly so in several games, but it ain’t gonna change. The players and Todd Golden have the right idea… control what you can control, yourselves and your effort, don’t let it get in your heads (that’s the fans’ job and certainly NOT Strick’s) and you’ll continue to be successful.

* My goal as a fan is to enjoy each game as it comes, first through the season, next the Conference and finally the NCAA’s. This team is as fun to watch as any I can recall, maybe even last season’s because the way they’ve grown in front of our eyes, overcoming a bit of an up and down start. The fire I always had for football but has been almost smothered these last few coaching cycles has come roaring back this basketball season! And it feels damn good…

Are you kidding here? That guy damn near died from the brush across his throat! It was almost a death sentence for the guy being assaulted. Surprised the cops didnt intervene. Guess they're chasing a speeding football player.
