Houston and Miller have no business being the starters, but it goes to show how bad the recruiting has been.

I'd really like to see updated weights on guys like Diabate, Summerall, Hopper, Reese and a few others.

I really hope Wingo and Hopper can add 20 or 30 lbs in the off season. They may be the only 2 SEC level talent wise linebackers we've got.

Watching Houston play last year was giving me flashbacks of Vosean Joseph, 90% of the time he's in the wrong spot, he just gets to the wrong spot much slower than Vosean . I know some on here were pretty high on Pierre coming out of high school, hopefully he outplays the hell out of his recruiting ranking.

There's no way the safety play can be worse than last year with the graduation of Jeawon Taylor, maybe Stiner will decide to transfer this summer. Hell I think we'd have more success playing with 10 guys most plays than the 11th being Stiner. At least the other db's would know before the ball was snapped there's no help back there as opposed to thinking they've got help over the top.

Yeah I used to look forward to updated weights too.....until they would be the same in fall practice as they were in spring......

                Agreed

On rare occasion when Stiner was in the right position to make a play he would totally whiff on the tackle.

The guy is unblocked late against Mississippi State last year and makes the sack and suddenly people decide he’s a star but that’s the only play he has made in 3 years

                  No that was Chris McWilliamson.

They are essentially the same player though.

it's easy to get them confused.

I really, really like our safety group. The two starters would start on most teams and that's not even considering Trey Dean finally getting a shot at his real position in year 3. 3 true freshman with potential there likely gets us at least 1 future player.

I just wish they had a real position coach and a scheme that wouldn't have them standing around looking stupid every game.

LB still sucks, but finally has hope if Wingo plays like a 5*. In a perfect world, Savage got the young DEs ready and we move Diabate to ILB in our base, which would give us another guy that could play at 235#.

If that were what happens Id be happy.

And yet, wake me up when Stiner isnt starting.

I think the odds are against us at successfully moving edge rushers like Diabetus and Wingo (and all tothe others) inside linebacker.

For sure. Just giving our players a little credit, bc I don't actually dislike the safety group anymore. I dislike the coaching group that influences the safeties.
Better than moving safeties to ILB.

LB is definitely an eye opener in a bad way. I like the guys we have at safety minus Stiner.
Man coverage just isn't their strength. TD can be a decent back up safety I think. I know i've
seen enough of him at star. Miller is probably the closest thing to a physical presence like
Reese, so I expect him to get a lot of snaps. Diabate looks more of a natural sam to me
and/or pass rusher. I don't know if he's physical enough for the will spot, but that is
for the staff to figure out. He definitely has the athleticism , which obviously is a good thing.
The play of the backers and OL were going to be what I looked at most over spring. We're going
to be counting on guys at LB that haven't played much, or in some cases any college ball yet .

                    Who would think at nickel?

Depends on the opponent. I liked Marco there in the glimpses we saw from him a year ago.
Asking Burney to play that spot isn't playing to his strength in my opinion. I think he's more
of a Marcus Maye type safety that can help you in the run game and cover a tight end.
Asking Amari to cover a slot or a back out of the backfield is going to be a mismatch
against a lot of teams we play. If it were me I'd probably play Marco there if Hill and/or
                    CK continue to improve.

Definitely looked good. I wonder how much he befitted from teams not having much film of him there though. I.E. He suddenly brought a coverage strength when teams had been watching film of that being the spot to exploit, but they probably didn't adjust enough to run right at him since that will be his weakness.
For sure. Anyone not wanting Dean, who was a serviceable CB, there due to his coverage liability, but wanting to see Burney there is smoking crack. I'd argue that he's not even close to what Maye was in coverage and even Maye, an NFL-caliber DB, would look suspect there. You'd have to shift the scheme to more like what um runs.
I think that's likely the safest option. If we end up playing ZC at DE and suddenly feel that run D is a strength, maybe it makes sense to make nickel a pass strength anyway. If a true freshman shows up ready to compete at CB, it would make even more sense. But what if Dean does what is very possible and looks like a starter at safety immediately? Stewart was ranked as a CB by some out of hs and plays better the closer he is to the LOS. He's also physical in coverage so being able to get hand contact quicker might be good for him vs safety. The other possibility, IMO, is to do what Quinn did and shift with formation. Nickel might be the toughest spot in this D and Elam might be our best player. He's also made for it as a big CB. Could move him there in a nickel and back outside the few times we're in 7-man fronts. This was an interesting situation before and losing spring ball complicated it. 5 months until we find out.
