Scottie Wilbekin, former Florida Gators Point Guard and current starting PG for the Australian League's Cairns Taipans, is having an incredible season overseas. He's leading the Taipans on their first title run and has been named the teams MVP and Defensive Player of the Year in his first season with the team. He's averaging 15.1 PPG, 3.3 RPG, 4.3 APG, 1.2 STL, and shooting 39.4%. He is looking to enter NBA FA and open to time in the D-League (which means he be cheap!).
As a four year player with the Gators, he helped lead Florida to an Elite 8 as a junior and a Final Four as a senior, often carrying the team in several big wins. After some off the court issues (the dude liked to kick back with Mary Jane from time to time), Coach Billy Donovan kicked him off the team, giving him a list of things he needed to do to get back onto the team: community service, increased GPA, double workouts away from the team, move back in with his parents (who also lived in Gainesville), and stay clean. He did all of it, eventually becoming one of the teams leaders and voices, also turning out 13.1 PPG, 3.6 AST, 1.6 STL, 2.4 REB, on 39% shooting.
My point: He's a cheap point guard option, who is young and has a lot of promise. He worked out with the Knicks last year before the NBA draft, so interest exists in some minor fashion. I think we saw him make a big jump personally and in ability his senior season at Florida and the year overseas helped him even more. Plus look at his current hair:
