Well, going into the game I felt good in a shootout based on our offense. In many ways, they did not disappoint. I also said two things I thought would be an issue:
Now I know what you're thinking, "Truth, what about that bs piss poor defense?" Don't worry, I'll get there, trust me I will. But I will take a minute to acknowledge there was more to this loss (though we will go 90% defense on this one).
Offense
Trask had over 300 yards and 4 TD's. I know some will be tempted to "ho hum" those numbers as we are used to seeing Trask put up those kinds of numbers, but remember it was just the beginning of last season when we would be building a statue for any QB able to put up numbers like that again. Kyle Trask did about what all he could do in this game.
Toney is a beast and if there were questions about how big of an improvement he's made at the position, they were answered today. Great game by him.
It sucks that Pitts stopped being at 100% halfway through, but we seemed to cover for it decently well overall.
Wright and Pierce have earned the right to be featured backs in this offense. Davis, I was praising you, but you gave the game away at the most crucial spot. Sorry, I can't trust you anymore. Not when I've got a Pierce and Wright and a Lingard waiting in the wings.
I said after that first down that we would run the ball and I wish I was wrong. Why you take the game out of the hands of the top QB in the SEC is beyond me. Awful, terrible, no good play call. Now, with all that said, the majority of this loss is to be pointed at the...
Defense
We've given up about 1,500 yards in three games. I thought last week wasn't great, but Ole Miss was what it was. Mullen (on the post game show) basically blaming the offense not scoring 4 TD's in the last 4 drives for the loss is infuriating.
The defense forced one punt and one turnover, that is unacceptable. Not being able to cover the slant is unacceptable. When my brother, seeing the way the teams are lined up, can tell we are giving up 4th down before the play is run, something is amiss. Granted, we can't waste our last timeout with that much time left. Hell, allowing 80% on third down is unacceptable.
Marco Wilson, you've regressed, I would not mind watching Hill or Kimbrough take your place because at least they haven't been here as long to show this.
Stiner, any playing you is coaching malpractice.
Kyree Campbell, hopefully, enough people ask you about what selfish thing you did to keep yourself out for so long that you learn to be a person who cares about others. No, I'm not talking about caring about fans, I'm talking about all the teammates you have let down.
Ron English, your safeties have been a liability for three years. I'm tired of it, I've been tired of it, and I can't wait to see who replaces you. How do I see Vanderbilt have safeties making big hits as receivers catch the ball
Todd Grantham, if you make it through the season, consider yourself lucky. Also, aren't you Mr. Blitz? Where have the blitzes been? When I saw them today, we seemed to rattle Mond, but of course, we wouldn't want to do that. Also, why does your d-line wait a full second after the ball is snapped to rush? It became a joke to watch after I noticed it each time. Ultimately, the buck stops with you. Seeing the numbers both LSU and Mizzou put up this week, it looks like you are coaching to get to the bye week right now.
We had a two score lead in the second half, and we blew it because we couldn't get a stop. I am doing what I can to try and stay somewhat calm as I get to this point in my writing. I've been writing for almost an hour, writing, deleting, trying not to go too far.
I honestly do try to keep it positive, and even contrarian when everyone is piling on (most of the time rightfully) on a person, coach, or unit to try and soften it up a bit. This defense, however, is the worst defense I've ever seen at Florida and that includes 2007. 2007 got stops when they needed it except for very few times. This defense barely gets stops period and sure didn't down the stretch today.
We have lost the 4th quarter this season so far 20-38, thank you Mick Hubert for that statistic. That's unacceptable.
I'll be blunt (and this is the last part I'm writing on this post after everything else), I'd bench every senior you is underperforming on defense that you can. Let them know that since they are no better than true freshmen at this stage, you would rather players who have the capability of improving and helping the team in the future. Since we can only get one stop a game, there is no way a walk on can be worse than the defensive starters. Heck, we might find one of those walk on gems that happens from time to time. Open all positions to competition. PUBLICLY announce you are having open tryouts for starting defensive positions and that any frat boy, computer science "nerd", dental, law, and even feminist studies major has a chance to start just by showing up. Show the fans, the players, and everyone else that you know this is wrong and not the Gator Standard. I'm also already sick of the 5 minutes I heard of Carbozo defending this defense like he did the 2017 offense while waiting to hear Mullen's comments.
Positives
Okay, I will try a few here:
Offense is awesome, Defense is the worst. Turnover cost us today because the defense leaves for no margin of error. Seriously, rushing 3 or 4 as much as we did, that's embarrassing. I'm really biting my lip right now, have at it Gator Chatter.
Go Gators!
- If we try to force the run knowing their secondary was awful.
- If we turned the ball over.

Okay, I will try a few here:
- Wright and Pierce look like they could be the real deal (I can't hate on the ypc for Pierce as one of his few carries was a 1 yard TD). We just need I line I feel comfortable behind and yet, I honestly would rather see few carries because I believe in the passing game so much.
- Florida has never had an unbeaten season and the last two Natty's had losses to SEC West opponents in October (spare me the comparison between the defenses, I already know).
- We can score a ton of points.
- I saw Trevez Johnson in there, with how bad the defense is, I like us saying "screw it" and seeing what the younger guys can do. They cannot do worse. I would love for anyone who watched the defense today tell me how that would be possible.
- Trask is still on pace for over 3,000 yards passing, and 40 TD's in the regular season. That would be a UF record.
- At least we aren't LSU...well, we have them next week, but that's a problem for next week.
