I joke a lot about drinking, but for the life of me I can't ever imagine being one of the most sought after CFB coaches to being such a drunken POS that I would go to work drunk and piss away a 3 or 4 million dollar a year job in less than 2 years...

He showed some pretty reckless and embarrassing behavior. Profanity laced speeches while being bombed at an alumni gathering and being drunk while escorting your team back to USC by plane is akin to drinking on the job. And those are just a couple we know about. Those two instances were so devoid on common sense reasoning one must assume there were many other incidents that took place that didn't make national headline.

His reasoning is about as sound as a HS teacher nailing a cheerleader in the bathroom at the prom and saying he shouldn't be fired because he is a sex addict.

The suit says that Sarkisian is now sober and ready to return to coaching...

Gee great... Thanks coach...but check your calendar. The season is over...Perfect timing...

I recall saying this was coming if they fired him. I don't agree with it, but I think he's got a decent shot at a settlement, at least.

but he told me to my face in a national TV commercial that he could cure any addiction I might have.

Yes, alcoholism is a disease but based on previous irresponsible behavior by Sarkisian while under the influence, wouldn't USC have grounds for termination for cause? The guy evidently thinks this is his last straw because if he thinks anyone's going to hire him after this act, he's out of his mind.

Alcoholism is a disease. And anyone who has had a family or friend inflicted by it understands. Still it does not eliminate the responsibility of him notifying his employer and seeking treatment for his condition. In which case his job should be protected. The problem is that he did not notify his employer and showed up at work intoxicated.

That's exactly why his lawyer is using specific dates in his argument. Basically said he was fired the day after he realized he had a problem via e-mail.

There is no one forcing anyone to pick up that first drink.

Ahh...but what if that first drink happens when you're still a minor? Supposedly, you aren't capable of making possibly life-changing decisions until you're an adult...age 21 to be exact.

I come from a family with several alcoholics. Dealt with it for years. You go to work drunk, you get fired end of story. Bye.

Although I have been retired a few years, I think FL is still an "employment at will" state; regardless, you can sue for anything. I had a secretary report for work @ 8 AM literally staggering, smelling of alcohol, and slurring her words. I had another employee drive her home and one drove her car home as I didn't want any action in our parking lot. I fired her and she promptly filed for unemployment and got it. Unbelievable some of our laws, rules & regs.

I agree, but substance abuse has almost become a protected class in our country.
