I love your story. My cousins all went to LHS also. My father went to Mulberry HS in the late 40s. I was born in Lakeland and lived in Bartow and Lakeland till I was about 6 yrs old. My dads family was all Polk County people. My first wife was even Ben Hill Griffins dietician at Shands in the 90s; Better yet Ben Hill Sr was a pallbearer at my great grandmothers funeral. I had the obit but lost it ......
and an onion belt.

Peace also started as a forward on Lakeland’s basketball team which was a state runner-up. Also on the team was 6’10” Timo Strawbridge who played at UF.

. He was 1 of 4 top QBs recruited by uf in 1980 (with Dale Dorminy, Roger Sibbald and Mark Massey.) He led the nation in completion % under OC Mike Shanahan.
Just a remind that 100 man rosters and classes of 25 or less were brought to you by the NCAA in the 80s to stop a couple of teams and to feed the tiny schools of players who would never gonthere otherwise.

I really started watching the Gators shortly after Peace, the 1984 season with Bell behind center being my first full season of watching the Gators. I only took an interest because my Dad was such a diehard fan, he attended UF in the 50's and played for the Dreadnaughts between '49 and '51, so I know he enjoyed watching Peace play as much as he loved watching Rainey and the Pouncey twins. Hope Peace recovers ASAP.

appears to be a lot of Polk County guys here. I didn't know you were. I went to Southwest in 7th grade and Crystal Lake JH the first year it opened 65 I think. I never heard that WP went there. We moved to Sebring home of the blue Streaks in 65.

Born in Bartow, moved to Lakeland in ‘70. I went to SW 73-76. Currently in Lake Wales. Our daughter-in-law is a Blue Streak alum.

Some of my best moments to and from Orlando have been spent at Lakeland exits.

I was at SW and played for the late great Tom Atwell and then became a Dreadnaught. Graduated LHS in 70.

Hey Joe, Atwell was a great coach. His son Terry was a good friend.
Yes he was! He left SW when I did (not because) to coach at Kathleen. A year later he got a soph QB named David Bowden who was one of the best HS QB's ever from Polk County. David is still a friend today and got screwed at UF because Graves had recruited him to follow Reaves and we hired that jackwad Doug Dickey. David did not fit with that idiot after years of the fun n gun with Atwell.

Terry went on to have a cool career as a photog for newspapers, used to see him on the sidelines at Gator games.

We probably know a lot of common peeps from SW and Crystal Lake. We should trade notes one day.

I was a new resident to Lachaway county in 1975 after 30+ years down in St. Pete. Wayne was a genuine human being back then and even more so now later in life. God Speed Mr. Peace, get well soon.

Not that I’m doubting that this happened but I cannot find anything on the Google machine about it.

…and still no link.

Could this simply be Russian disinformation?

Wayne Peace is an American hero, so it may even be the North Koreans.
At this point we just can’t be sure
