Mixed feelings about James Franklin. Personally, I don't care much for him, but that's just me personally. He is an incredible football coach, recruiter, and motivator. I went back and looked at Vanderbilt's recent football seasons. Bobby Johnson, who was considered to be a good coach by Vanderbilt standards went 29 - 66 in 8 seasons. James Franklin went 24 - 15 in 3 seasons at Vanderbilt.
True, Franklin left under a cloud of scandal at the end of his Vanderbilt reign with the rape scandal and charges of interference and cover-up by Franklin. Then he made some critical remarks about the football program at Vanderbilt when he left Nashville for Penn State. In hindsight it looks bad, but how many football coaches would have done the same thing Franklin did if the light of scandal was shined on their program. Leaving one school for another is never easy for a coach and the school. There are going to be hurt feelings and there was a lot of bitterness the way things went down in Nashville. They loved him for awhile though at Vanderbilt.
He is a big ego guy and he likes being the center of attention and in front of the cameras. He rubs some people the wrong way. But what big-time successful college football coach doesn't have the same persona?
Franklin is a great fit at Penn State. He is a Pennsylvania native, played at East Strasbourg State, so Penn State is a likely dream job for him.
