Recruiting So Does Recruiting Class Rank REALLY Matter?

Just picked this up off the wires and it gave me pause. Clemson and Washington aren't really burning up the recruiting universe but Bama and OSU look like they are doint nicely. So in the end how much does this matter in light of the head coaches' ability and the staff? Of course stats are one of those dynamics that one can draw whatever they want from them depending on ones' biases and prejudices. I'm not a pumper for Mac but I'm definitely not calling for his head either. I want to see what his team does with his players. We have a decent QB this year I don't think we lose more than one of those games this year or last. But that's something one can never know. But those rankings below sure give me something to think about in the light of how recruiting has gone so far this year. Anyway, discuss....

ALA (1,1,1,1,1)
CLEM (11,9,17,15,15)
OHIO ST (4,7,3,2,5)
WASH (29,27,37,18,23)

Btw in case your pitchfork and torch fire is blinding you, I forgot to mention those are recruiting classes from 2016 to 2012 in order showing that year's rank.

Interesting. We may find out very soon how much Washington doesn't belong in the playoffs.
Dabo is doing more with less.

What was your question. Oh yeah. Recruiting rankings matter.

YES and NO. There are so many variables that come into play and that is not even considering eligibility and player attitude. But it is always better to start with better talent than lesser talent. When a coaching staff is really good at developing players, class rankings are not as important. Nick Saban is one of those coaches who not only recruits very well but develops his players. Many coaches do one or the other, but not both. And then there is the matter of filling a team's needs. Some coaches are good at recruiting a particular area, such as defensive backs (see Will Muschamp), but fall short in other areas. So far, McElwain has not proven to be very well at overall recruiting, player development or filling needs. Ouch! Is that 3 strikes?

It only means squat if you're getting the players you need. If you pull the 3-5th ranked classes but fail to pick up even one offensive lineman two years in a row, it sucks balls and is worthless.

How about DTs?

Mac and his staff certainly appear to disregard the rankings.

My response? If Washington continues recruiting like that, they won't be back to the playoffs. It isn't sustainable. Also, you are going to find out those rankings matter as Bama is significantly better at the line of scrimmage. Stars matter on D.

Clemsso also has been getting a very nice haul of 5 star or high 4 star players, largely at our expense, since 2006, startimg with CJ Spiller, Sammy Watkins, to Artavius Scott, Ray Ray McCloud, and Deon Cain. Hell.they took TWO FIVE STAR LBs, one out of Florida last year.

Id be curious to see how the 5 star numbers look bc I expect him to be about 4th or 5th behind Bammer, CUMeyes, Corndogs, and Clowns. Im on my phone and cant do it but I notice even this year they are third in 5 stars. If we looked at onlg the 5 stars out of Florida, Id guess they are third. He is eating our lunch.

Those Tebow, Spikes, Dunlaps, RFN and Easleys really change the game.

Dabo has gotten a lot of miles out of his 5 stars, unlike Less Miles.

Yes. But you must recruit for need as well. And you must get an elite quarterback. Unless you're Bama. Both Clemson and Washington have five star quarterbacks.

Also, Jalen Hurd is a five star quarterback. Although Bama can probably do it without one.

It matters to win the SEC. Only 1 team in memory won the SEC recently without real top recruiting beforehand - that Auburn team Cam was on but it still had some top notch recruits.

The problem is you will be facing teams with real good talent most weeks in the SEC unlike many conferences so its magnified when you dont keep up with the others there.
