The funny thing is...I consider this a rebuilding year especially on defense. Anyone expecting ATL or more has a serious mental illness. My hope was for Franks to take the reigns and our offense be prolific while the D catches up. 8-4/9-3 is the ceiling. I am resigned that Mac gets a 4th year so my hope(outside of Fields long term) is that Mac rights the ship on offense and our d starts to gel late in the year. We went so hard after Zaire that...well...I guess we'll just wait and see.

I agree with you that this will be a rebuilding year on defense, so championships aren't a realistic expectation for this year. I fully expected this year to be a down year defensively 2 years ago simply because there were so many key players that we knew would leave after their junior year. The defense in 2007 lost some games, and this defense will too. Hopefully it will just be around 3 losses and not more. The defense should be better in 2018, so the biggest measurement of improvement for this season will be more on offensive performance than in wins and losses. Will those 3ish loses be shootouts or blowouts? Will these games be watchable through the 4th quarter or did we already lose by the end of the 3rd? I'm so sick of getting blownout and embarrassed. If this team can score points and be entertaining to watch, while still winning at least 8-10 games, then that is a huge step in the right direction.

It's sad that this is where we are right now, but it's reality.

I'll take the Spurrier model over the Chump model, thank you. Just score more than the defense gives up.

Me too. SOS was a pioneer. One of the greatest offensive minds in CFB history. It wasn't until he hired Stoops that he won that elusive title. I never said Chump's model was good. Defense will keep you in games more than offense...do you disagree?

Well my bad...you were saying something about improvement. Sorry. I'll pull a trick from URGs deck...where do you think the D will rank overall? Thanks in advance.

Well, I obviously think there will be a drop off on D but I still think it can be a top 25 type defense. The 2007 defense was TERRIBLE and still cracked the top 30. I feel better about the D because of all the injuries we had last year that allowed our youth to play. We return a solid core of players and if we stay relatively healthy I think we could be better on D than expected.

To your other question (offense or defense), I do like the Spurrier model...but honestly, we're UF and we recruit Florida & SE high schools. There's no excuse for us to ever have a defense ranked worse than 30 or so overall. Offense is a different story, as there are pinball offenses out west that rack up a ton of yards. So if we can have a top 30-50 offense (which would be somewhere in the top 5 SEC offenses) we should be fine.

Based on last year...that's 359 yds or less per game. We gave up 300 per game with an elite defense. So, only 60 more yds per game. I will bow down to Shannon if that happens.

I'm ready to mea culpa all over the place. Offense...defense...STs? No not STs.

Sometimes you guys get me excited for next year.

Meh. We averaged 47 points a game in '96. Defense is what we did when not scoring TD's. Which is the way it should be. Maybe it comes down to personal preference. I'd rather watch a great offense and average defense than visa versa. Defense keeps you in games when you don't have an offense.

I keep hearing about these kids that got playing time...you mean the ones that gave up 400 yds/game to LSU/FSU/Bama? They played well?
Reality is a bytch.

Defense makes losers feel better about themselves.

Yeah. Cuz the offenses were so busy controlling the ball they made the D look good.

Question: Did you enjoy 2012?
