Does everyone agree that Graham Hall sucks at his job?

When the GSMB made a "comeback" a few month ago, I asked him if he had siblings named Hume, Simpson, and Trussler.

It's an area joke.

Just checked that board for the first time in ages. They have 7 posts in the past week, all from the same 3 people or so. I happened to stumble across this post from Arnold Feliciano, who is basically running that forum. I have spoke with Arnold and he's a nice guy that has basically been asked to do the job of 10 people due to budget cuts and layoffs.
SEC Country does terrific work and has a strong staff. Zach, a five-star recruit when he left, cut his teeth with us here. They are driven by recruiting coverage, while we have to spread ourselves out more into other UF sports. And we have to pay attention to the varied wants of our print readers with the Gainesville Sun. The majority of those readers don’t care much about recruiting, or so we are told. They help pay most of the freight that keeps this site up and running free.
Thanks for reading.
"Or so we are told" comes from the boys up top who seem content to let revenue slow disappear into the sunset. It was those same boys that shut down their bustling forum in the first place. I thought at one point that this site and the GSMB could be beneficial to each other by funneling traffic both ways, but that was shot down by the boys up top.

They certainly don't seem interested in making money over there. Never seen anything quite like it.

Have you followed the goings-on since we bolted from GSMB? Halifax sold its portfolio of 36 newspapers to a newly formed holding company, New Media Investment Group, Inc., in 2015 for $280 million. That comes out to roughly $8 million per newspaper, or about the average NBA salary from Thanksgiving though New Year's Day.

Who is New Media Investment Group, Inc.? It's essentially a shell game. The company was formed after GateHouse Media, another failed media holding group, went into bankruptcy in 2013. Instead of restructuring with stock, a new holding group was formed, which now trades under the symbol NEWM. GateHouse's goal with its holdings: To transform newspapers from "print-centric operations to multi-media operations."

Multi-media, my ass.

BTW, a peak of NEWM's actual earnings (solid) versus projected over the past few years. And they call this an "investment group." I suppose, if you plan to short the market. Well, they did close the gap somewhat in the third quarter, but none of these podunk operations can turn a profit unless they keep spending to a minimum. Hence what you have in Gainesville, a newspaper run on a string.

The Sun for years was nothing but a number to the New York Times Media Group. That hasn't changed. Only when a newspaper has sufficient cash flow to operate as an independent -- which hasn't happened in years -- can it really operate in a profitable and productive fashion. The St. Pete Times did it for a number of years, but those days are over. People who invest in the print media ought to have their head examined.

When are they going to figure out that to make money today you must have a GREAT WEBSITE full of content not available elsewere (not just AP wire shyt from the day before yesterday) that produces advertising revenue that also happens to print these stories for the elderly who still read print?

Would they exist at all at the moment if it werent for publishing legal notices?

That's unfortunately not practical for a regional whose main allure is local news, hence why national and international are outsourced to the wire services.

However, the Sun has a unique advantage, UF, that I believe is underutilized in terms of reporting.

BTW, that 2nd Q gap could have been the result of a charge off. Regardless, you're looking for a positive trend.

Understatement of the century. They are the catbird seat of Gator traffic and they are wasting it.

Corporate calls the shots on staffing. When staffing is thin, it's corporate emphasizing the bottom line over content.

Why? The local paper does it here.

t is a heavy dose of cops, courthouse stuff and local politics but plenty of pics from music festivals, expos, concerts, conferences, fairs, car shows. Hell just take 100s of photos of interesting peoples and things at those and you generate bazillions of hits. Reviews of nightlife, new amd old hotspots, restaurants, etc. You must have instagram, twitter, facebook too. Hell interns and retirees do most of it just to see their names on bylines.

How hard is this? Is Dooley in charge?

It can probably be done but not with dead-wood guys like Dooley on cruise control until retirement. They need some energetic new blood.

Even the young people they hire seem like lazy, young Dooley clones. Bowl and Graham Hall? Really? Out of all of UF, you pick these dorks?

Whoa, the memories from Graham Hall. Used to stay there during baseball camp from about age 7-17. Got busted one year sneaking over to the volleyball camper's rooms and had to go on a midnight 10 mile jog behind one of the Gator player's red ford ranger through campus as a punishment. There were about six of us and we could not stop or walk other than to puke, and all six of us did before they would let it be over. These days the University would get sued for something like that. My parents would have commended them and whipped my ass, but there was no way I was telling them.

Wow! That’s crazy. Had a similar experience my jr of high school for a football camp and had to run the stadium at 6am. No way coaches get away with this type of discipline today.

Ox, I love this board and the members. It's awesome, yet pathetic, that I get my gators news here and not from the sun.

The Sun, through its history and connections, should be the reliable news source. Instead, they hire a bunch of lazy fuk-tards, like hall, Dooley and andreau.

I love this board, I really do.

But if the sun were semi-competent, and didn't shut down the forums for complaining about their poor effort, there wouldn't be gatorchatter.

Their loss, our gain.

I agree completely but the other thing that really gets to me is the fact that they refuse to conduct actual journalism and break a story.

Seriously, when was the last time the paper broke a story?

When was the last time Dooley or anyone else shared something that wasn't available ubiquitously already?

Why is this paper soooooo afraid to tell the public something that hasn't been sanitized by the athletic department?

Remind me again what journalists are supposed to do?

This x 1,000. Dooley knew all along that S&C was a hot mess. He knew of the dysfunction in the program but was too chicken $hit to do anything.

When we were getting clobbered by Arkansas or Michigan, he could have called Mac out, written a great article, and maybe helped right the ship. Instead, he and Andreau were writing recycled crap.

I don't even go to the site anymore, b/c what's the point.

Ah for the days when I actually believed the news on television and in the paper. When my family went to or by Gainesville I used to grab a Sun just to read Jack Hairston.

Fwiw, I went over there. Look at this hard hitting piece of journalism by Andreau. Ox, if I'm violating rules by copying and pasting, mea culpa. But the following is pure crap and perfect example of the Suns lazy crap journalism....

Based on conversations I’ve had with fans and friends, and after listening to talk radio the past few weeks, the consensus out there seems to be that Feleipe Franks has little or no chance of being Florida’s starting quarterback on opening day Sept. 1 against Charleston Southern.

My response to that is this: Hold on for a little bit and let’s wait and see what happens in the first two weeks of spring practice. By then, we’re going to know a lot more about Franks and the other quarterbacks in terms of how they’re fitting into Dan Mullen’s offense and what kind of potential they have.

There are certain things about Franks that we all agree on. He’s got a great arm. He’s got great size (and getting bigger and stronger if you check out a recent photo of a shirtless Franks on Twitter following a workout). He’s got athletic ability. He’s got a considerable upside. What he doesn’t seem to have is a natural feel for playing the position in terms of pocket presence, reading defenses and the ability to make quick, and correct, decisions where to go with the ball.

Reversing the negative side of Franks is where Mullen comes in. His track record for developing quarterbacks, and fitting the offense around them, is exemplary. In Franks, Mullen is going to have a lot of ability and potential to work with. And he’s getting a kid who has a great work ethic and wants to be coached. He wants to be a great quarterback.

So, before we cast off Franks, let’s give Mullen a chance to work with him, to coach him, to develop him. I would think Gator fans would be excited about the possibility of what might happen putting a kid with this much raw talent with a coach who really knows what he’s doing.

If anyone can transform Franks, it’s Mullen. Let’s give it some time to see if that transformation occurs in the spring. If it doesn’t, maybe Franks will be at FAU or some other school by the time the fall rolls around. But I just have this feeling that Franks might be right here on Sept. 1, in The Swamp, Florida’s opening-day starter at quarterback.
