Former Gator Quincy Wilson recruiting top-100 DB Josh Sanguinetti to Florida

https://www.seccountry.com/florida/florida-recruiting-quincy-wilson-josh-sanguinetti

Josh Sanguinetti hearing from Quincy Wilson
South Florida is loaded with defensive backs in the Class of 2019, including top-100 overall safety Josh Sanguinetti.

The 4-star recruit from University School (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) is ranked the No. 4 athlete and No. 54 nationally in the 247Sports composite. He excels on both offense and defense for the Sharks, but colleges are recruiting him as a safety.

“He’s a tremendous athlete,” University School coach Daniel Luque said of Sanguinetti. “He’s a smart kid in the classroom and I think a lot of things come effortlessly to him, especially his play on the football field. He kind of baits people into making a move and then he gets his arms out to make interceptions and breaks up passes with his 6-foot-8 wingspan.

“He’s probably one of the best cover guys with ball skills that we’ve ever had here at University School. That’s including guys like Quincy Wilson. Josh a real special kid.”

Former Florida cornerback Quincy Wilson won a Class 3A state championship with University School as a junior and played in the Under Armour All-America Game following his senior season. He starred in his three years at Florida (2014-16) with 74 total tackles and 6 career interceptions.

Wilson was selected in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft by the Indianapolis Colts. His high school, collegiate and pro success is a source of motivation for Sanguinetti.

“The players that have been at U-School in the past years have pushed me real hard to be the player I am today,” Sanguinetti said. “I look up to guys like Quincy and we actually text each other. I’ve talked to him about Florida, of course.”

Quit worrying about this guy. He may be great, but we have very good RBs including two who just enrolled.

We have quality RBs. However, we desperately need a 5* commit to build momentum. Sometimes perception equals reality and we need some serious buzz at UF!

You guys are just aggravating yourselves. Pickering would be more important and would be a five star if anyone got into the MS deep woods to evaluate him.

Willie Taggart has proven to be a strong recruiter but we have his brother. The kid grew up a UF fan and that makes me confident in him choosing us in the end.

Lots of kids who grew up rooting for one team ended up flipping over to the enemy later.

Sanders already laid the "dream" quote on us. He's not coming here and the idea that FSU will reel in yet another marquee RB while we get leftovers makes me ill.....

Florida needs to achieve better roster balance moving forward

https://247sports.com/college/flori...etter-roster-balance-moving-forward-118276356

TAMPA -- Florida coach Dan Mullen is looking to balance out his roster at each position, and there are a few spots that are currently a little tricky.

Mullen has provided his ideal numbers at each position in a given recruiting class, and from there we can extrapolate the rough balance of how the roster should look. It's not all that dissimilar from either of the last two head coaches, though there are one or two areas with a little heavier emphasis.

For one, Mullen's offense will probably be a little heavier on receivers and tight ends than running backs than former coach Jim McElwain's. What the new coach really wants to avoid, though, is an issue that has plagued Florida's offensive line for years: unbalanced classes.

"I play the numbers game all the time in roster management," Mullen said last week in Tampa. "You're constantly 'how many do we have at this position this year? How many do we have to sign?' You never want to have to sign too many at one position in any given year. It's not healthy."

After severe mismanagement of the numbers from 2010-12 on the offensive line, Florida is still trying to recover roster balance at the position.

The Gators signed just six offensive linemen in that three-year span and two saw their careers end quickly (a medical hardship and a transfer).

That left Florida scrambling to bring in offensive linemen over the next few years, causing some pretty severe reaches and even further unnecessary turnover. The Gators signed five offensive linemen in 2013; only one finished his career at Florida. They signed six in 2014; only two either finished at Florida or remain on the roster.

Finally they had better luck in the 2015 class, signing five with only one no longer with the program.

The issue now, though, is that Florida is going to have some serious attrition up front following the 2018 season. Four seniors on the offensive line are set to graduate, while junior Jawaan Taylor could conceivably depart early for the NFL. Even if he doesn't, that would leave Florida with just 11 scholarship linemen returning and a target number at the position of somewhere between 15 to 17.

Mullen doesn't want to have to take that many offensive linemen in one cycle.

"One of the things we have to do over the next three to four years is create some roster balance where we don't have a mass exodus at this position in one season and now you're trying to go recruit seven offensive lineman in one year," Mullen said. "That's not going to work. So you want to have that balance."

So what exactly does Mullen's ideal roster balance look like in a given recruiting class?

Here's how he broke it down last week in Tampa:

1 Quarterback
1 Running Back
2-3 Wide Receivers
1-2 Tight Ends
3 Offensive Linemen
3-4 Defensive Linemen
2 Linebackers
2 Cornerbacks
2 Safeties
0-1 Specialists

Here's how Florida's current scholarship chart shapes up, as of May 16. Briefly, we'll outline a few things of note. Click on the thumbnail to expand it.

-- If Mullen wants to maintain decent roster balance moving forward on the offensive line, don't expect the Gators to take more than four this cycle. It wouldn't be surprising either to see a graduate transfer for the 2019 season or a transfer in that could balance out the current redshirt freshman class.

-- Florida will definitely need to take at least two tight ends in this recruiting cycle.

-- Numbers are relatively good defensively, with the only really glaring need inside at defensive tackle. Florida needs to add both true nose tackle types and three-techniques that can also play strong-side end in a pinch.

-- Florida probably won't need a specialist in this class, as it wouldn't be surprising at all to see walk-on Tommy Townsend go onto scholarship in August. At that point, he would not count as an initial counter after having been a walk-on at Florida for two years.

Spring game schedule for Florida commits, targets

https://www.seccountry.com/florida/543539

After four weeks of practices, teams throughout the state of Florida will wrap up spring football this week with games and jamborees.

The Gators have several commits and targets set to compete over the new few days, and Florida assistant coaches will be on hand to catch the action.

IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., features multiple Florida targets: 5-star running back Trey Sanders, 4-star running back Noah Cain and 4-star guards Deyavie Hammond, Dontae Lucas (Florida State commit) and Evan Neal. The Ascenders have an inner-squad scrimmage Thursday.

Taking the field Wednesday night will be former Gators wide receiver commit John Dunmore and his teammate at Chaminade-Madonna Prep (Hollywood), 4-star defensive end Khris Bogle. Both visited Gainesville in the spring.

Florida’s No. 1 tight end target, Lakeland’s Keon Zipperer, plays on Wednesday night at Venice High School. Gators tight ends coach Larry Scott will be there to watch Zipperer.

Top-100 offensive lineman William Putnam (Plant High School/Tampa), who plans to visit Saturday for the inaugural Gator Grill Out, travels to Jefferson High School on Thursday. Florida offensive line commit Ethan White (Superior Collegiate Academy/Tampa) also plays Thursday and will be at the BBQ this weekend.

Florida WR commit Dionte Marks (DeLand High Scool) and 4-star RB/WR target Mark-Antony Richards (Wellington High School/West Palm Beach) will be in action on Friday along with 4-star defensive ends Derick Hunter (Dunbar High School/Fort Myers) and Lloyd Summerall (Auburndale). Marks and Summerall are also scheduled to attend the Gator Grill Out.

Florida safety commit Trent Whittemore (Buchholz/Gainesville) is also playing Friday as well as 4-star defensive back targets Kaiir Elam (The Benjamin School/North Palm Beach), Brendan Gant (Lakeland/Kathleen) and Cortez Andrews (Godby/Tallahassee).

4-star cornerback DJ Turner II sets commitment date
One of Florida’s cornerback targets in the 2019 class is nearing his decision.

DJ Turner II, a 3-star recruit from Suwanee, Ga., announced Tuesday night that he will make his commitment on June 25. Florida is one of his top 11 schools along with Alabama, Clemson, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Michigan, Notre Dame, Oklahoma and Stanford.

Turner is scheduled to officially visit the Gators this weekend for the BBQ, which will be his third trip to Gainesville this year. He attended junior day Feb. 24 and the Orange & Blue Game on April 14.

Turner also took unofficial visits last month to Notre Dame and Michigan. The Wolverines are considered the team to beat in his recrutiment at this time. The 5-foot-11, 170-pound Turner is ranked the nation’s No. 39 overall prospect in the 247Sports composite.

I hope we go after Peter Parrish. He's now ranked higher than J. Jones and he seems under the radar (he was high on MSU, but they got their QB already - I guess you could say we have also). We need as many DT QB's as we can get (still can't believe we didn't pursue Burrow):

Florida Gators recruiting mailbag: May 17th edition

https://www.gatorcountry.com/feature/florida-gators-recruiting-mailbag-may-17th-edition/

Jhunt42: Will Florida go after another quarterback for the 19 class since they are not going after Joe Burrow? If they are, do you think Peter Parrish is the quarterback they are going after?

AS:
Right now, I lean towards just one quarterback in the class but that all depend on this fall. Parrish is a guy that Dan Mullen is high on so if they do go after a second quarterback in the class than I wouldn’t rule him out at all.

Ufgatordad: Any particular reason why offensive line recruiting has been struggling this cycle? Is it just related to staff turnover?

AS: Florida is in the mix for several top guys like Keiondre Jones, Will Putnam and Warren McClendon but just like any other position they want to see how the offense will do before they jump on board. The wait and see mode is still around.

Gators1992: This may have been posted already but will Jalon Jones compete at the Opening 7v7 or Elite 11 that gets shown on ESPN?

AS: Jones hasn’t been invited to the Elite 11 yet but there are few more spots still to be picked.

Chooch: Are you getting the vibe we are in a “wait and see” modes again with recruits wanting to see product on the field? As in, there is sincere interest and kids are excited about us, but nervous that we’ll be the same old gators (of the last few years)? Also, a lot has been made of our football dorms as of late, do you hear the chatter from kids about the dorms specifically (not facilities overall)?

AS: A lot of guys are in the wait and see mode and I know fans don’t like to hear that but guys want to see an offense before they commit. Do I expect Dan Mullen and the staff to add more guys to the class this summer? Yes, I do and I think they will top targets but I do expect a lot of big names to wait. As far as the dorms go, I do hear a lot about guys saying they’re in bad shape but I’ve never really heard a kid say he choose not to come to Florida because of that.

Jump_pass: How many defensive backs is Florida expected to take this year? They seem to be in the thick of things with a ton of the top kids. Derek Stingley, Chester Kimbrough, Kaiir Elam, Tyrique Stevenson, Chris Steele, Jaden Davis, Brendan Gant, Nick Cross, Maybe Akeem Dent. It sounds like they’re setting up to sign a very talented class in the secondary.

AS: The number is four and yes Florida is in the thick of for several top guys this year. You can even add Jordan Battle and DJ Turner to the list of top guys on the board. With Marco Wilson and CJ Henderson likely leaving at next year for the draft, this is a big year for defensive backs and the Gators need to reload the depth at the position.

UFsports24_7: Who do you expect our next commit to be and in what time frame?
AS: I’m not going to lie this is tough for sure because none of Florida’s targets have really came out and set a date yet. If I had to guess I would say Chester Kimbrough makes a decision sometime this summer and Florida is in good shape with him. I will say that I would expect a commitment in June at the latest.

Gatordon: How much of a factor does position reputation play in successful recruiting? We always seem to recruit extremely well recruiting defensive backs as opposed to how we have struggled at offensive line recruiting.

AS: Kids look at the position coach more so than the history of the position in most cases but Florida’s history with defensive backs is something every kid in America knows about. A lot of that has to do with the position itself and how much attention it gets compared to a position like offensive line. On that note though, John Hevesy should get a lot of attention because year in and year out he produces some very good offensive lineman so that should change the narrative from the past.

Macbgator: Who are our defensive tackle recruits and who do we most likely sign??

AS: Jaelin Humphries and Patrick Lucas are the true defensive tackles that are on the board but a guy like Nathan Pickering well likely see time inside as well. Florida is in the thick of for all three right now with Humphries and Pickering both scheduled to visit this weekend.

Irgator12: Will they allow you to have any barbecue at the picnic? Also, at the picnic who could possibly commit?

AS: Unfortunately the media didn’t get an invite to the barbecue but we will have a lot of updates from the event. As far as who could commit, I don’t see a clear cut guy that I would label as on commit watch this weekend. However it wouldn’t surprise me to see someone get caught up in the event and commit but that’s any big event.

Gatorboy08: Are we after 2 tight ends? If so, is it possible we could get 2 of Ethan Rae, Jaheel Billingsley, or Keon Zipperer?

AS: Two tight ends is the goal for this year and Florida would have for those two to be out of that group of three. Right now I don’t think it’s out of the question that they get two of those. Billingsley has said Florida is in his top two and Rae has Florida high up there. Zipperer doesn’t publically name any leaders but we know that Florida is still high on his list. Zipperer will likely take his recruitment deep into the process.

Scottb15: Camilo Eifler, originally from California and former 11th linebacker in the country is transferring from Washington. Do you think we have any interest or chance here I think we could use the help at linebacker.

AS: I haven’t heard of any interest from the Florida side or the Eifler side of things. While Florida needs at the position, they do have a little more depth this year than in years past.

I have serious issues with the bold. Especially with how poorly msu OL was the last few years due to lack of depth and recruiting. Injuries and transfers happen and we shouldn't take just 3 OL. Especially with the lack of talent hevesy is attracting. It's one thing to get 3 4/5* guys and another to get 3*s. Mullen needs to fix that asap.

Here's an example
STARKVILLE — Mississippi State’s football roster was finally released Wednesday and you’ll find only one high school offensive lineman signee from the Bulldogs’ 2017 class, Cordavien Suggs, on it.

The Bulldogs expected at least one more and hoped for two more when they signed three-star tackle Montravious Richardson out of Georgia and three-star guard Josh Cooper from Louisiana in February.
http://sports.usatoday.com/2017/08/...longterm-problem-for-mississippi-state-oline/

And

Throughout Dan Mullen’s time in Starkville as the head coach of Mississippi State football, his teams excelled at several things. However, many fans were often frustrated by Mullen’s inability to consistently piece together strong offensive lines.

There have been a few really good units, but his team seemed to struggle in this aspect more than it should have.

Most of the ol guys we have are average at best. There will be medicals, transfers, non qualifiers etc . Take 3 OL is a mistake imo. We need 5.

Omar, I gotta agree w/ you. The only way you 'only' sign 3 is if the roster is stacked and you don't expect attrition. It seems 4 would be the minimum every year. We lose a ton of OL's this year. We signed 4 this past class, but one was a JUCO. Hopefully they re-evaluate that number...
