Vanderbilt: Derek Mason has received a raise and three-year extension, according to The Tennessean. Salary details were not disclosed, but it will be more than the $2.5 million in 2015. In addition, multiple assistants received undisclosed extensions and raises, including offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig, and the recruiting budget increased. Mason is 10-15 in two seasons, including a bowl appearance last year.

USC: Lane Kiffin was paid $2.4 million in 2015 as part of his buyout from USC, increasing the total to nearly $6 million, according to tax returns obtained by USA Today. It was previously reported Kiffin’s buyout payments ended in June 2016. In addition, Steve Sarkisian was paid $3.3 million before his dismissal in October 2015, and former athletic director Pat Haden earned nearly $2.8 million in 2015.

South Florida:
Former Texas graduate assistant Victor Gill has joined the USF staff as an offensive quality control assistant. Gill spent the last two years working with Texas’ offensive line. He was previously a GA at North Texas.

Several Big Ten athletic directors believe there will need to be a limit on football support staffs.

It’s been a topic of discussion for more than five years, but staffs are only getting bigger and bigger. Some coaches say it's unfair. Some say they're just providing more opportunities for coaches. There are limits on full-time staff, strength coaches and GA's. Will support staff be next?

"At some point we're going to have to get our arms around it a bit," Illinois AD Josh Whitman told the Chicago Tribune. "The numbers are getting big. The job description is a little more vague. …

“Once you get in that football building, how do you define what one person does and another person does? You start putting limits on that, there are some inherent challenges in that."

I'm guessing Wilson is still getting paid from Indiana (otherwise OSU would be paying him $1 million or more):

Ohio State:
Offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson’s contract is a 2-year deal that pays $650,000 this year and $750,000 next year, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer. In addition, quarterbacks coach Ryan Day has a 2-year deal that pays $400,000 this year and $800,000 next year, and defensive coordinator Greg Schiano will earn $700,000, up from $600,000 last year.

South Florida: Texas defensive graduate assistant Bryan Hill has joined the USF staff as a defensive quality control assistant. Hill spent the last two years at Texas and previously worked at Midwestern State.

Pitt: Pat Narduzzi was paid $1.83 million in 2015, according to tax returns obtained by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. That includes $1.31 million in base salary. His total compensation was slighty higher than the $1.7 million Paul Chryst made in 2014.

Ohio State’s assistant salaries will total less than 2016, and the Buckeyes still don’t have a $1 million assistant.

In 2017, new offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson will earn $750,000 in 2017, and new QB coach Ryan Day will earn $400,000. Both will have higher salaries in 2018, but the total salary pool will be around $4.3 million. That would have ranked 12th nationally last year.

To compare, Alabama assistants will earn $6.5 million and Michigan coaches will earn around $5 million — and the Wolverines have three assistants making more than $1 million. No OSU assistant has made $1 million, though Meyer has lost several assistants to head coaching jobs, like Tom Herman.

In a time when assistant salaries are only getting higher, one of the top programs in the country is moving in the other direction for a year.

Fedora is getting paid:

North Carolina: Larry Fedora has received an extension through 2022. When including base salary, supplemental compensation and expense allowance, his annual compensation is as follows: $2.29 million in 2017, $2.57 million in 2018, $2.95 million in 2019 and $3.05 million in 2020-22. Fedora is 40-25 in five seasons.

This is interesting:

New Jersey: Former Rutgers assistant Chris Demarest has been named head coach of the New Jersey Warriors, a new program that will let players from any New Jersey junior college participate. The team will play a 10-game schedule against a mix of JC’s, prep schools and college JV squads, according to Bruce Feldman. Demarest has coached at Hawaii, Rutgers, NC State, Florida State and at several other stops.

Gus Malzahn says he and Chip Lindsey will meet in the middle when it comes to the Auburn offense.

Malzahn has handed the keys to Lindsey, but it’ll still have some Malzahn feel.

“He wants to throw it first. I want to run it first. We’re going to meet halfway,” Malzahn said on WJOX. “In the spring, we were about 50-50. We’re going to throw it more on first down. He’s done a great job with our quarterbacks. I’ve got a lot of trust in Chip. He was with me in 2013 off the field as my right-hand man. We go way back, so I’m excited for it.”

Texas A&M:
Citadel defensive quality control assistant David Cooper has joined the Texas A&M staff as a defensive graduate assistant, according to his Twitter account. Cooper spent one year at The Citadel.

Big 12: The Dallas Morning News reports the Big 12 is expected to announced next week it will distribute $33-34 million per school, up from $30.4 million last year.

The spring evaluation period is almost over, but many staffs are already back home.

The recruiting quiet period and camp period begins on Thursday and goes through June 26, when a dead period starts.

More SEC schools boosting support staff:

Texas A&M: Former A&M quarterback Conner McQueen has joined the staff as an offensive analyst. McQueen was a backup QB for the team from 2012-16.

Chart: Tennessee expands support staff with former NFL coaches

Heading into an important season for Butch Jones and Tennessee, the Vols support staff expanded this offseason.

Not only did the on-field staff get overhauled, but, Jones added multiple coaches coming from the NFL or other FBS jobs to work off the field in Knoxville. It’s not quite an Alabama-sized support staff, but it’s a similar landing spot for experienced coaches this year.

Not including recruiting staff, here is the 2017 Vols coaching support staff.

Tennessee%20support%20staff.png

"I think any time you add individuals that have the experiences that they have, it lends itself to creative thinking, maybe some new ideas, some new energy,” Jones said this spring about all the staff change. “I think it's also been verified that we're doing the right things in this program, and that individuals want to be a part of this football program."

Last year, the Vols had five quality control assistants. This offseason, Nick Sheridan became Indiana QB coach, Derek Day became Butler LB coach, and Walt Wells was promoted to Tennessee OL coach.

Stephen Smith and Ryan West remained at Tennessee in the same quality control roles, and Steve Stripling was moved into an off-field role from defensive line coach to director of football program development.

Jones found multiple coaches from the NFL looking for work. Gerald Brown worked with the Falcons from 2008-14, and he was previously a Tennessee assistant from 1983-88. He’s also the brother of former UT assistant Kippy Brown, so there are plenty of ties.

Offensive quality control assistant Tony Sorrentino will serve as a quality control assistant after four years coaching the Jaguars wide receivers. He wasn’t retained there after a head coaching change there.

Defensive quality control assistant Ryan Slowik spent one year with the Cleveland Browns and has also coached with the Jets, Cardinals, Broncos and more since 2005. He’s spent one year as a college coach, at Wisconsin-Oshkosh in 2004.

Jones also hired multiple coaches coming off college jobs. Kort Shankweiler spent the last four years at FIU and was let go as part of a head coaching change. He previously worked at Central Michigan, though after Jones had left.

Defensive quality control assistant Eric Lewis spent the last two years coaching defensive backs at Georgia State, but was let go as part of a head coaching change. Lewis has previously served as defensive coordinator at Eastern Michigan and Weber State.

Tennessee opens the 2017 season against Georgia Tech at the new Falcons stadium, followed by a home game against Indiana State and a trip to Florida.

Eastern Washington lost 6 coaches to D1 schools, here's why:

Cal: Offensive coordinator Beau Baldwin will earn $570,000 annually on a 3-year deal, according to Scout.com, plus a $25,000 signing bonus. Baldwin was previously set to earn $240,000 as Eastern Washington head coach. His Cal contract also includes a retention bonus of $80,000 on Oct. 1, 2017, Aug. 1, 2018 and Aug. 1, 2019. If Baldwin leaves for a job other than a head coaching job in the Pac-12 or with a non-conference opponent, he would owe 100 percent of the base salary on the deal. If Cal dismissed him without cause, he would be owed 70 percent of his base salary, talent fee and retention bonus for the remainder of the deal.

North Texas: Head coach Seth Littrell’s new 5-year contract includes a raise from $815,000 to $900,000 and a $36,000 signing bonus, according to the Denton Record-Chronicle. Littrell took over a 1-11 team and went 5-8 in his first season.

I really like Jeff Brohm....and if we have an opening I'd like to see him in consideration:

Purdue: Jeff Brohm has added three new staffers. Former WKU safeties coach Mike Cassity has joined as director of high school relations. He spent three years working with defensive backs and moved into an off-field role in 2016. Austin Peay tight ends coach Ryan Wallace has joined Purdue as a quality control assistant, as CoachingSearch previously reported, and former UConn defensive line coach Kevin Wolthausen has joined Purdue as a defensive quality control assistant. Wolthausen was Purdue’s DL coach in 2012.

Georgia: Former UGA and NFL offensive lineman Fernando Velasco has rejoined the program in an off-field role focused on life skills. Velasco played at UGA from 2003-07.

Auburn: Gus Malzahn says he expects to name a new director of football operations and new assistant athletic director in the next 10 days.

(Willie Taggert making more moves, great hire at Oregon): Oregon: Intern Ikaika Johnson has been promoted to defensive graduate assistant. Johnson spent two years as an intern and was also a student assistant.

Nope. One of the main reasons I've kept this thread alive is I want to follow what WE (UF) are doing.....and we have not added a single support staff member this entire off-season. We replaced one we lost (Callahan), but we have not added any new positions. When he convinced Hughes to stay it was pretty much a given he was going to get more help. Well??? Where is it? We need at least 3 to 5 more recruiting staff positions. I think we have enough GA's and "analysts", but not recruiting staff. Remember the story about the QB visiting during the camp last year? True or not, we need to make sure our recruiting staff is on top of things.

I will give credit for the improved recruiting so far this year (for 18 and 19). We are definitely more active on the recruiting trail and are making more offers, being mentioned for more big-name recruits, etc. Davis seems to have been a really good hire....on both coaching and recruiting.
