When it comes to underhandedness, one must consider the origin of the term "Maverick" =
Samuel Maverick was a lawyer, land baron, Texas cattle rancher in the mid-1800s. That's when branding cattle was all the rage for identifying ownership. Well, Maverick decided to not brand and declared absence of brand identified a cow as his. This would mean he owned all cattle unbranded as well as running wild cows too. Shifty Sam Maverick.
