If I used a gennie more often and not just as a storm back up I would invest in a Honda, Just make sure whatever you buy to start it and let it run for about 10-15 minutes twice a year. Treat any gas you run through it with Startron….and disconnect the fuel line to drain the tank and let it run completely out of gas before storing it.....I have a 15 year old Briggs& Stratton 7500 that I'm giving to my Mom and sister and it has run flawlessly since being maintained this way.We can't all be rich like you ;)
The B&S engine will probably want to make you gouge your eyes out after listening to it for more than an hour or so too....I'm not certain but there may be one that's around 9000/6500 starting for a little less $. Generac might be OK too, but when I read the reviews there were quite a few really bad ones. Was hoping to spend a little less than that, but if it is worth it, it is worth it.
I like that you can see what you are drawing and the added extension, though this one looks a bit less efficient than the others on the fuel consumption.

Yeah I think the Honda's are great especially when you have other uses for them. Their fuel efficiency and sound would be enough for me to justify the extra cost. I have known dozens of people who have them and use them for camping, boating, working and a power source for running equipment. I have never heard anyone of them say a bad word about them.I have uses for the Honda other than storms. I needed something that a teenage girl could tote and crank. That’s the reason we bought it. You can’t beat a Honda as far as cranking. My brother has some cheap thing he bought from tractor supply. Works like a champ.

We had a small one running at the hurricane a few years ago and I thought it had died, being used to my own B&S.It’s amazing how quiet they are even under a load. You can be fairly close to one and have a normal conversation.
I got a generator that runs off my tractor PTO, 25KW
Better get those generators now.

With those generators, you top off the oil and check the gas bro.Only way I could justify LP whole house is if I had gas line in neighborhood. That said I lost 2 5000w Briggs powered generators after Irma. Don't think running 14 days continuous was in the design specs.
Yeah for certain. These B&G engines DO burn a little oil and some of the older models may not have had the low oil shutdown feature...Being an air cooled engine I personally give mine a break by shutting it down after about 3 or 4 hours of use at the most and letting it cool down for a bit before checking the oil and then restarting. The hotter the engine gets the more likely the extremely hot oil will get partially vaporized as it's getting pulled from the crankcase into the cylinder and end up fouling plugs and some exiting as exhaust gases....so yeah best bet is to check that oil everytime ESPECIALLY when operating it in hot, humid Florida tropical season weather when temps are often close to 100 degrees....Oh, and check the damned oil every single time....With those generators, you top off the oil and check the gas bro.
Seriously. Check the oil EVERY SINGLE TIME.
No engine issues, Gensets burned out on both. Never had an oiling issue with a BS engineWith those generators, you top off the oil and check the gas bro.

My dad just had a generator installed. I think the whole thing was around $12k and the tank is 250.I'm starting to lean towards a stand by system maybe 16k-22kwatt. Has anyone had one installed recently? Would love to know the cost of installation and what size LP tank they would require? Cost of tank and any other input greatly appreciated.
Thanks, did he have the tank buried? My dad just had a generator installed. I think the whole thing was around $12k and the tank is 250.
