If we win this weekend vs LSU, is Foley forgiven?

It's no secret that I'm a huge Foley supporter, but this weekend does nothing for his job security...win or lose. Midway into his first season, Mac appears to be a great hire. Some will never get past the WM debacle while others are totally focused on the future.
Nice to see ya posting again, Alpha.
Go Gators!

Thanks, I'm a fan simply from the Billy D hire alone. I've always lurked around here and listen to the podcast every single week, even though I didn't post here. Ox does a really good job. Will be interesting to see what he does with the podcast during basketball season.

Playing Devils advocate here.....What if we lose out the rest of the season, would you start blaming Foley?

Well, I don't see that happening with the likes of FAU and Vandy on the schedule but you never know. Either way, I won't have to because everybody else will do that for me. LOL

Foley hiring Muschamp wasn't necessarily a mistake. He was the hot commodity at the time. The extensions are what pissed a lot of Gator fans off. Were they a mistake? Sure, looking back it's easy to see they were. But, did we really know just how awful Muschamp was (queue Law, I knew, I knew!)? Most of us thought we didn't have any talent on the team, or at least not enough to win the big games. Now we all see it really was just a horrible job of coaching by Muschamp and his staff. JMac has done an amazing job filling the gaping holes we had on the OLine. Coach Summers has done an amazing job with the young men he has to work with on the OLine. Receivers are catching the ball.

There's joy in the Gator Nation again. Can't we just enjoy that?

Law and Dubs will never forgive Foley. Most of the rest realize he is the best in the business and while he had made mistakes there isn't a college athletic program that has equaled the success he has had a Florida.

No forgiveness needed. Foley is the man!

separate the fact that only the hiring and firing of coaches is on Foley while the successes and failures on the field are NOT on Foley

Sage words.

This game is one of many in the season. As others have noted, JMac and the team are ahead of schedule...nobody has indicated that Foley is ahead of schedule, nor is he directly tied to the success we've enjoyed thus far. JMac, the staff, and the players, have earned that credit.

I've always been a Foley fan, and continue to be one. But, the mistake of WM's extensions are squarely on him....as much as hiring 'the right guy' in JMac. Foley's job is finding the right coaching staffs for UF's various sports programs. Aside from the WM debacle, I think he's done an awesome job and needs no vindication.

One has nothing to do with the other.

However, I find it odd that many here wanted to blame Foley for Muschamp's failures but refuse to praise Foley for McElwain's successes.
That's been their MO from the start. Blame Foley for Zook and Muschamp, but then explain-away the countless, endless successes and successful coaching hires and championships, etc.

Anyway, it's happier times now, I'm not interested in rubbing anyone's face in a pie of "I told you so's," let's just remain united and enjoy 6-0.

I cannot imagine any Gator "hating" Jeremy Foley. He is highly regarded as one of the best AD's anywhere and has done an overall outstanding job at UF. That does not mean that I or "we fans" must agree with everything he does or that some of his decisions will not be subject to question. My main reasons for being unhappy with the Muschamp fiasco was 1.- the hiring another unproven DC as HC after Zook failed so miserably; 2.- the knee-jerk contract extension which gave Muschamp financial security for life; and 3.- the fact that Muschamp is a dog.

But a win or loss at LSU this week will not sway my opinion about Foley one way or the other. At this point, however, I am very pleased with what I am seeing with coach Mac and I believe the future is very bright for Gator football.

I think the Muschamp situation was bungled so badly and embarrassed the university so greatly as to be a fireable offense. Simple as that. Foley kept his job and he should be grateful for it.

So just to recap the Foley "debate" as it stands now:

Negatives:
Hired Zook
Hired Muschamp (and fired him approximately 10 months later than some think he should have).

Positives:
Hired Donavan
Hired Meyer

Foley is the only athletic director in Division I history to supervise a program that has won multiple national titles in football (1996, 2006, 2008) and men’s basketball (2006, 2007). Overall, 24 Gator teams have been crowned national champions under his watch, the second highest total in the nation among sitting Athletic Directors. Florida has won 15 national championships since 2006, tied for the second best total nationally and 11 since 2009, the second best total in the nation. Florida is one of only two schools in the nation who have captured multiple national championships in each of the last five years and is also one of only two schools to have six different sports win national championships in the last five years. UF has captured 120 SEC Championships under Foley and the lacrosse team has captured four straight American Lacrosse Conference Championships. Florida has swept the Halifax Media Group Southeastern Conference All-Sports Title 14 times under Foley, a feat no other school in the SEC has ever accomplished.
UF’s commitment in the classroom is equally impressive. Under Foley, UF student-athletes have been honored 100 times as Academic All-Americans, the highest total among sitting Athletic Directors and fifth best in the nation since 1992. The University of Florida has more than 1,800 SEC Academic Honor Roll honorees in the last decade.
The Gator athletic coaching family, which Foley had a large part in assembling, has collected 100 conference Coach of-the-Year awards during the last 24 years. The Gators had an amazing 10 coaches earn the league coach of the year honors during the 2012-13 year. Equally impressive is that 10 UF student athletes won their respective conference player of the year in 2012-13.
Florida student-athletes have remained involved in the community and beyond. A total of 345 UF student athletes participated in 4,035 hours of community service in 2013-14, partnering with 25 schools, 12 civic organizations and 20 non-profit organizations. The "Goodwill Gators" program was recognized by the National Consortium of Academics and Sports and received the 1998 Outreach and Service Award and Florida was honored with a White House commendation for volunteerism in 1994.
Foley was named the Street & Smith’s SportsBusiness Journal National Athletic Director of the Year in June of 2006 and the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame awarded him the 2007 John L. Toner Award. The Toner Award is designed to honor and acknowledge outstanding athletics directors who have demonstrated superior administrative abilities especially in the area of college football.
Foley also served on the NCAA Division I Management Council from 1997-2002.
Foley was named Honorary Alumnus of the University of Florida by the Florida Alumni Association Board of Directors in October of 2000.

In 2008, the Hobart Alumni Association presented Foley with the Medal of Excellence, their highest honor, for outstanding achievements as Athletic Director at the University of Florida, which has brought honor and distinction to his alma mater.
The Holderness School, a small, private, college preparation school in Plymouth, New Hampshire, presented Foley, class of 1970, with their 2007 Distinguished Alumni Award in November of 2007.
Foley was named the United States Sports Academy Carl Maddox Sports Management Award winner in October of 2009. The Award is named in honor of the former athletic director of Louisiana State University and Mississippi State University, Corbet Award and United States Sports Academy Board of Trustees member, and is given annually to an individual for his or her contributions to the growth and development of sport enterprise through effective management practices.

Why? Guess you don't remember all of the hate towards Foley the last couple of years when Muschamp was our coach. People were literally calling for his job. LOL I purposely waited until things were going the other way to see if people have changed their tune. I guess you think we should only talk about him when things are bad?

No, I remember it then and was just as blown away by how damned stupid people could be. So he whiffed on the guy. Same with Zook. So what. Looks like he hit a home run with Mac, Meyer, Donovan, Walton, Rhonda Faehn, Sully, just to name a few.

Football isn't the only sport at UF. Foley isn't the Football Director, he's the Athletic Director. Just saying.

What the hell would we have to be mad at Foley about. :headscratch:

Foley is the only athletic director in Division I history to supervise a program that has won multiple national titles in football (1996, 2006, 2008) and men’s basketball (2006, 2007). Overall, 26 Gator teams have been crowned national champions under his watch, tied for the top total in the nation among sitting Athletic Directors. Florida has captured a nation’s leading 17 national championships since 2006 and UF is the only school in the nation to have captured multiple national championships in each of the last six years. This is silly. The instant gratification monster raises it's ugly head once again.

Firing someone who was deemed by his peers too be one of the best in the business just because he made a bad call on someone who at the time was considered to be a solid and reasonable hire is ridiculous. I seem to remember the fire Foley crowd pulling out many of the same arguments when he hired a relatively unknown guy named McElwain. And what about probably one of the greatest home run coaching hires of all time in Billy Donovan. If we were to fire Foley after all his accomplishments as AD just because Muschamp sucked we would look like bunch of ignorant dolts and deservedly so.

Foley is an employee and not above reproach for some bad decisions he's made such as the Muschamp contract and not firing him the year after he went 11-2 (which could be considered reasonable), but those bad decisions were based on good reasoning and good intentions, not incompetence..
