That is how the govt got Al Capone..he didn't pay taxes on ill-gotten gains.

Yes every 3rd grader by now has heard that back in the 1920s and 1930s the US federal government was too corrupt and incompetent, not unlike today, to bring charges and get a conviction on Capone for any federal crime in connection with his bootlegging etc. So they got him on income tax evasion on the proceeds of these actions.
That however does not address the question of whether during prohibition the US government generated more income on taxes paid on income from bootlegging in 1932 or 1933 or whether in 1934 or 1935 the US government generated more income on taxes paid on legal alcohol transactions. I would be willing to bet, I know the answer, but i have not studied it.
