The Florida Gators landed a big commitment on Thursday when Clearwater (Fla.) Calvary Christian safety
Amari Burney picked the Florida Gators over finalists Ohio State and Virginia Tech.
For Burney, it was his longstanding relationship with numerous members of Florida’s staff that was the deciding factor.
“It’s just the coaches and my relationship with all the coaches there especially Coach Mac [
Jim McElwain],” said Burney of why he picked UF. “The things they have around the school like the academic facilities stand out and it looked great when they showed it to me. Being close to home isn’t a big factor but it’s a nice thing to have.”
For quite some time now, the Gators have pitched the chance for Burney to play either offense or defense at the next level. However the four-star seems highest on playing safety in college, and knows this is a big position the Gators are looking to fill in the 2018 cycle.
“They have been saying people are leaving so there is going to be spots open,” explained Burney. “I think I can fit in well with what they do. I feel like I can fit into any scheme. Since they have been talking safety I have looked into all the guys they have produced.”
This past spring Burney played both wide receiver and safety for his high school as well as return specialist. With his recruitment now over the 6-foot-1, 215-pounder can focus more on perfecting his craft for his final year of high school football.
“I have been adding some weight while working on my speed and strength,” said Burney. “When I come downhill my size can help me be a better tackler and jamming guys at the line in coverage.
