Let's start with football first.....
First seasons:
1990 - Spurrier: 9-2 (no bowl, probation)
2002 - Zook: 8-5 (lost Outback to Michigan 38-30)
2005 - Meyer: 9-3 (won Outback over Iowa 31-24)
2011 - Muschamp: 7-6 (won Gator over Ohio State 24-17)
2015 - McElwain: 10-4 (SECE champ, lost Citrus to Michigan 41-7)
2017 - Mullen: 10-3 (won Peach over Michigan 41-15)
So, historically, the bar is somewhat high for new coaches that aren't immediately following legends. Don't follow a legend, win 9 or 10 in year one.
Only Spurrier and Meyer came in as coaches that had just won conference titles, Spurrier ACC at Duke (still an underappreciated feat, considering UNC hasn't won the ACC since 1980, NC State since 1979), and Meyer ran the table at Utah in the Mountain West.
Napier isn't following a legend and just won a conference title.
The big plus here, if true, is that UF is finally turning the page on the "we're Florida, that's enough" mentality of recruiting student-athletes for football. They are investing in people and facilities.
Coach FPP will be able to win some games, but he has alot of chaff to clear out and a culture to rebuild from the ground up. The schedule is top heavy with home games next year, meaning pulling out a W against the Pac 12 champ in the opener and we could be sitting no worse than 5-2 heading into the WLOCP.
Napier's hires so far are all safe, people from ULL. Once he branches out in the next week or two and brings in non-ULL coaches will be an indicator of direction and whether or not UF is truly going to shell out the $$$ needed.
Give Coach FPP a chance. If we are sitting here next year at this time awaiting an appearance in some lower-level bowl like the Gasparilla again, then we can start a bit of murmuring.
As for the athletic department as a whole. Stricklin is a Starkville dork that has overstayed his welcome. He needs to go. Not one major sport is better than when he became AD. That's unacceptable. Getting flat out embarrassed in G-ville whether hosting Texas Southern on the hardwood or in a postseason game against South Alabama on the diamond, and zero being said about it shows he's gutless.
As for the board, it's still the best. A good mix of pumpers and bungholes, all allowed to freely express opinion without some overbearing ******* moderator that turns and faces Gale Lemerand Drive three times a day and only allows pumping waving a ban wand 24/7. I'll keep hanging around for sure.
