You got me curious, so I looked it up. In the last 15 NFL drafts there have been exactly two non-QBs taken from FCS or lower schools in the first round: OT Tytus Howard by the Texans in 2019 and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie by the Cardinals in 2008. Both attended HBCUs, btw. The other obvious trend was the overwhelming majority of first rounders, something like 80%+, came from P5 schools.

@Blake_Alderman: Despite a later effort from #UF, Humphrey stuck with UGA

Lem Barney, Jackie Slater, Robeet Brazille, and, of course, 89 otber NFL players. Traz, I get that you are expert on aspects of football, but you evidently know little about FCS football and less about JSU.

Shemar James is the one I’m hoping for. Good corners like Humphrey are a dime a dozen. Elite LBs aren’t.

89 players from a small school is nice, but that is a drop in the bucket compared to the NFL history population over all. I mean instead of acting so holier than thou.... remember that until the mid 60 most teams would only "draft" from kids in their local area... so small schools also got a lot more love that way. Gil Brandt basically what we know of National Scouting in the mid/late 60s. So yeah out of the history of NFL there have been a small percentage of NFL players (some Hall of Famers/All time greats) from small schools. Those are the exception not the rule.

Or kid can take the 1.5 and play one year and transfer to a bigger school.

That depends on the contract details. Everyone seems to be assuming it's a single lump sum with no early termination penalty.

But if I were offering these deals I would make it a multi-year deal that escalates each year, not a single lump sum. Pay $250k year 1, $500k year two, $750k year 3, with a $100k early termination clause.

It's Barstool I guarantee it was all about proving they could do it. Miniscule amount to them to make a statement

Barstool Sports is going to pay Travis Hunter $1.5 million to go to JSU. Unbelievable.

I think someone else commented on this already but… Sounds like someone needs to tweak the rules to make sure recruiting doesn’t become a bidding war.

Sure. I agree there. Just saying regardless of this deal, I would expect most of these big deals to be structured where the "play 1 year for a big payout then leave" scenario isn't that feasible.
