Having a veteran QB may actually make us more consistent on offense. We aren't asking him to throw for 400 yards a game.

There's optimism, there's blind pumperism, then there's this.

Without at least the *threat* to hit a deep ball and go vertical, defenses will load up the box and force us to rush vs a stacked front. See the bowl game for how that works out against a competent defense.

Mertz can't run and as you stated, he's not a threat to pop off 300-400 passing yards...especially with our WRs next year.

That's why people are annoyed. There were several better options in the portal and getting stuck with Mertz isn't a great reflection on Napier--and I say that as someone who generally has been impressed with his recruiting efforts generally (in both hs recruiting and via the portal).

Just glad to see you off the ledge, old hoss.

Today couldn’t have realistically gone any better. Still missing on some battles, but between the lack of drama(flip talk) and all signing on ESD, I love the class. I’m actually a huge BN fan, which is why I hate seeing the setbacks when they occur. Not only do I not have the mental energy for another search/this guy’s great last guy sucked restart, I happen to like him and want him to be the guy here long term. So the moment it looks to be trending contrary it’s more disappointment that comes out than anything else.

Anyway, don’t call me old.

If you mean consistently bad then you might be right. 57% passing this year and completely padded his stats in 3 games against Illinois St, NM State and Northwestern (1-11). Otherwise his stats were consistent all right. Notice his multiple sub 100 yard passing games. If Mertz is our starter next year we will struggle to repeat this years results.

Against Iowa 16/35 175 1 TD 2 INT
At Nebraska 8/18 83 yards 1 TD 1 INT
Vs MINN 16/27 170 yds 0 TD 1 INT
VS Ilini 18/24 164 0 0
@ Ohio St 11/20 94 yard 1 1

But to be fair, I forgot to mention his rushing stats, 50 rushing attempts for -40 yards. Mr Consistency no doubt.

Next year’s WR room just got better and I’m sure there will be a few more In the next month.

Mertz isn’t bad as a backup and have to believe he would be an upgrade from
miller . Hopefully Rashada wins the job over the summer .

And of course a different system, different coaching, different players around him could never, EVER, make a QB play any better, right?

I know, I know, that's just a setup question to continue to trash this staff and the offense, blahblahblah. You can't argue with a mob that's hellbent on being pissed. Yesterday, many of you had this entire recruiting class being dismantled today and it didn't happen.
