Insane that they thought GLASS was the best material to use when building that giant tower of water inside a building.
They think it might have been caused by freezing temps outside. I wonder how long the aquarium has been in there. The hotel just went through renovations. Looks like it did a lot of damage to the first floor.

Reminds me of the opening scene of the first Mission Impossible.

I know right?
This story was on Fox News earlier.
They just did some updates and refurbishment on this thing in 2000.

I smell a lawsuit against some poor contractors insurance.

I can’t imagine the cost of losing all those tropical fish, alone.
Those damn salt water aquarium fish are expensive.

Yeah, I saw that little snippet about freezing temps.
I don’t get that one.
This thing was in the lobby.
What would freezing temps have to do with something … inside?

I’m missing something for sure.

War in Ukraine, natgas shortage, lobby colder than usual, etc. etc.

In The News:

Today, the AquaDom aquarium at the Radisson Hotel in Berlin collapsed, spilling 260,000 gallons of water into the lobby, along with 1500 fish of 100 different species. The aquarium, which stood at a height of 82 feet, cost almost 13 million euros to construct in 2003. The largest cylindrical aquarium in the world, it was made from acrylic and using Reynolds Polymer Technology panels.

I bet it was magnificent to see in person. One report said it happened at 5:30am. If it had been even an hour later, much less two the lobby would have been full of people. Imagine waking up to that explosion.

This is one bad ass dog. Gotta give some respect to the coyotes here too. Not sure if I was number 7 or 8, if I wouldn’t have thought discretion was the better part of valor and retreated.

Casper went to Marine boot camp.

Dog is a Great Pyrenees.
They have the reputation of protecting their flocks, No matter the odds.
My daughter has one.
When she went to pick him up, The Pups parents were onsite.
Farmer told my daughter the Dad recently killed an 8 point buck, chased him down, killed him. He was threatening their cattle.
Or at least the dog thought so.

Very large dog, very friendly with people and other dogs but, Very protective of my Daughter.

So basically, when the coyotes showed up the dog said, “there’s only eight of you? Hell, I’m not even gonna bother stretching first.” About right?

Impressive. We have a pack of coyotes a few acres back that I can hear at night. Can we borrow the dog for a few days?

Our neighbor had several New Foundlands which look the same. One was solid black and looked like a bear walking around. Massive dogs. ALL.THE.FUR - they had built an a/c dog house for them.

Had a dog growing. Big sob (no pun), mutt with red hair. Called him Red,. I played in the front and if I got. Lose to the road he would grab me by the britches with his mouth and drag me back close to the house. I would tackle him, bit him, rassle him, ride him like a horse.

I did something and mama got after me with a belt. Red backed her up in the corner on the screen porch and everytime she would move, he would growl at her. Went on for about 20 minutes til she wised up and put the belt down.

Red was gone to a new home soon after.

He scampered off but returned injured two days later after Wierwiller put out a call on social media.

Who lets their dog have a social media account? Casper was just hanging out on facebook to see if Wierwiller would go looking for him... :snicker:

The expert in constructing similar facilities said it should have been clearly stated that the aquarium would only be able to last until a certain point, with some only surviving 25 years. The structure burst after just 19 years.

Mr Schuranm claims he was asked for a quote to build the aquarium but decided not to go ahead with it, noting it was too large and he could not say for sure how long it would survive.
