Depends on the city. In DC, I've always used Metro. I grew up with it and find it to be pretty safe - plus for the tourist things, it pretty much goes wherever you'd want it to other than Georgetown. If I was visiting Atlanta from somewhere else, I rent a car or Uber; or better still visit somewhere else. NYC - if limiting myself to Manhattan - I'd hoof it or taxi/Uber.Scenario: You fly into a medium or large sized city with your family.
How do you get around the city?
Rent a car
Train/subway
Bus
Uber
We are planning on going back to Schuyler, VA again this October. During this trip we are going to head up to DC for a day. We will be driving but IMO that isn't a horrible proposition since it will be just for one day. The main point to observe in DC is, if you park your car in the garage at Arlington National Cemetery, make sure you are there to get it out of the garage BEFORE they close for the day. Otherwise your parking fee continues to add up all night long... jreed can confirm. We don't like being captive to public transportation but it makes sense in some cities to not have to park a car. Uber has become very convenient to rely on plus you can ask a local a lot of questions.
We went to DC a few years ago and relied on the metro for everything which was stressful with two young kids. Everything about it was out of our comfort zone but it was an adventure. We didn't pack light either because we had a black tie event and were there several days so in hindsight the Metro wasn't the best idea with luggage.
In smaller cities, like Savannah, I've done the tourist buses with the kids that let you on and off at stops.
Well, we allll know what "MARTA" stands for...After riding on MARTA a few times, rent a car is definitely the way we’d go.

And then there are those that only have Bolt.Uber is stupid cheap in a lot of countries.
For DC last week, I flew into DCA and rented a car because for first two days, I needed to be able to hit a bunch of places like Herndon, Fairfax, Tysons Corner, and Hanover, MD. Dumped the car back at the airport Tuesday night and took Blue Line Metro back to King Street (hotel basically 2 blocks down King Street). Metro and Uber for everything else in DC and Blue Line straight to airport to leave. I do similar wherever I go. Overseas is different, especially depending on the situation, but I pretty much use public transportation, taxi, and in last few years, a LOT of Uber... Uber is stupid cheap in a lot of countries.
