I just listened to a podcast with Shane Matthews. I know a lot of people don’t like him but he knows football. And he basically over the last two years has seen our team each year and said that we were slower, smaller, and weaker - and we just didn’t have athletes that could compete against anybody. He called both of the last two years to have losing records.

And he was right.

He thinks that we win eight games at a minimum next year. He said that Mertz is not going to wow you, but he will make routine throws. He said he’s been watching him and the kid can make the routine throws and we will have a consistent offense. And he thinks the defense will be markedly better.

he predicts a minimum of eight wins. He thinks that if AR had come back, we would actually have a worse record than we would with Mertz.

If you want to listen to the podcast. I put it below. It’s all within the first 10 minutes.

Thanks for sharing.
I agree with Shane on this.

I’ve given Shane a ton of flack in the past over his time in the can(and I still suspect he joined the Aryan Nation just to get by in there, the GD’s were never his style), but I fully agree that he knows football. His points are valid here regarding the QB play last year, AR’s potential or not, even if they’re tough to imagine at times. Over half the big plays we saw from him didn’t matter because we were already almost out of the game due to earlier inconsistencies. And if this year’s freshmen WRs have even remotely the same impact as Etienne and Montrell(first year) did last season, it opens a lot of avenues for us that we didn’t have last year.

I’ll add that Matthews, along with several other Gator greats, hated Meyer and that definitely skewed his vision of things then. But remember, he also accurately called the ‘08 OM loss weeks in advance, which was as unpopular as it was outlandish at the time. I hated it at the time, but I’ll give him credit for having insight.

I expected Mullen recruiting to be better.

But I talked to some high school recruits. They said that both Mullen and MacElwain coaches were goofy as hell. Nothing like the staffs of the other big schools.

So forgetting for a moment that we did not invest money or structure into the recruiting process, just the personalities of the coaches were cringe.
A local HS coach told me that Grantham was very foul-mouthed, even for a football coach, and had an air of arrogance. We got Dexter because UF was his dream school no matter who was recruiting him.

I’ve said it before, but in addition to the quirks, I’m convinced the show cause penalty threw Mullen into a funk about recruiting and the administration that made things even worse.

I’m hoping for brighter days ahead. I like the systemic approach and culture being established but it’s got to start showing some results.

Bateman is killin it.
Gators CB for 4 Star LB K.Jones
I believe we have only 2 HS LBs in previous two cycles. Did we gain any LBs through the portal? I wouldn't be surprised if staff takes 5. Pretty good selling by our coach and the early PT aspect is real.

Our LB room is loaded with portals this year.

Word on the street is that we might be looking at a couple commitments this upcoming week.

Some possibilities:

1. Izaiah Williams (6’0, 172) - 3* WR from Carrollwood Day school. 4.46 40 at UA camp. He had a great sophomore year, but did not play much as a junior, because he broke his collarbone and was out pretty much the entire year. He only had six catchers. Two of them for touchdowns. If he has the senior year everybody thinks, he could be a fast riser.

2. Jordan Pride (6’1.5, 175) - 4* Safety - decommitted from FSux several weeks ago. We are considered the front runner. (Ranked 84 overall)

3. TJ Moore (6’3, 190) - 4* WR from Tampa Catholic. Huge lean to us. Another riser in this class. Ranked 179 overall.

we are in the hunt for a couple flips. (We’ve basically pulled even with their committed schools). But if they flipped, I wouldn’t see this happening for a bit.

4* DB Jamari Howard (committed to Michigan State) - #104

4* DE Dealyn Evans (committed to Texas A&M) - #175
