If we don't win this year and finish impressively, as much as I like Mac and his style, I think it'll be over for him. He's just not a great recruiter, it's pretty clear at this point. We need to look better to recruits to compensate for his laid back efforts on the trail. I know it's only year two but, yea it's critical at this point.
Foley have muschamp 4 years and you think mac is getting 2? After a 10 win season?

You're projecting. I didn't say he's gets fired after two years, what I said was if we don't win big this year it's over for him, as in sinking ship, not recoverable. Sure he'll be around another year or two but the end will be in sight.

So what's win big this year? SEC East? SEC Championship? National Championship? I mean we only went to the SEC Championship last year with a **** offensive roster.

So tell me your position, we look like a disaster for half the season and have another mehhh class to follow it up and everything is fine and dandy?

How bout we start here. Do you dispute my point that if we don't pick things up considerably on the recruiting trail we are going to be in trouble?

I agree we need some better overall classes but last year's class was far from mehh...and i believe in this coaching staff to actually make these players better. You see a disaster for half the season i see the promise of what the coaching staff can do when we actually have talent behind center

I saw exactly what we were. And I'm sure without realizing it you just agreed to everything i have said, only difference being that you "believe" we'll be better this year while i simply am saying we better be or we're in trouble moving forward.

I know I am Mr. Negative but at some point the future is NOW. Not slamming anyone but this is his third class for god's sake.

How do you figure? He started at UF in the middle of the last recruiting season and this is his first full class from beginning to end in which, among other things, he was able to secure by far the largest class of early enrollees in the country including Alabama's top kicker recruit that he stole away from them and who to date looks like he knows what field goals are.

He also inherited a team with a severe lack of offensive talent, especially on the offensive line and skill positions, and yet he won 10 games with some of the largest contributions coming from two offensive players that he recruited in his first class (Callaway and Ivey). And he did all that with a horrible kicker and a starting QB who was suspended mid season and a backup QB who should never have been a QB in the first place.

Putting aside your incorrect count of recruiting classes, where does your dissatisfaction come from? What exactly are you expecting?

I cannot for the life of me figure out why everyone is so down on Mac at this point. We have no idea how good or bad this last recruiting class is at this point but we do know it is loaded with players at areas of need. On top of that no one seems to realize what a huge deal it is to get in such a huge class of early enrollees - the largest class of early enrollees in the country. Having that many players getting an entire Spring to prepare for next season makes it much more likely they will be able to contribute right away. The extra QB preparation will be especially invaluable.

My gosh people! Most coaches are given a 3 year window before they go to this level of win or else attitudes. I mean it'd be one thing if he'd inherited a decent team but he certainly didn't and yet we won 10 games and the SEC East title. That's better than Urban did his first year. And though Urban was able to rally the team to a Natl Championship year 2 it was largely due to the level of players the last guy left him on both sides of the ball. Who knows how far Mac might have taken us if our QB hadn't been such a pinhead? Coach Mac definitely inherited an amazing defense but offensively he won in spite of having maybe the worst kicker ever and being hamstrung with maybe the worst quarterback we've ever had over the entire second half of the season.

Call me a sunshine pumper if you want but I feel pretty good about our progress so far under the new regime. My thinking is if he could win with what he had last year, how much better will we be with a defense that is relatively equivalent, a much improved offense and a kicker who seems to know how field goals work.

Yeah. yeah, yeah, there's not a single new or original point in this post. And no laundry list of excuses changes the fact that Mac needs to win on the field and on the recruiting trail NOW if he wants to keep his job. It's not really complicated.

This is a big year for the regime. Crap the bed this year and the pumpers wont have a leg to stand on. Lots of new coaches do well out of the gate with players they inherited. And as other have said, richt at miami seems to be recruiting well.

Yes, of course.

Robinson is a 5* receiver according to Rivals. Telfort is a 4* with Rivals with an offer from about every big school. He's 6'6, 320 lbs.

Are you disputing the inaccuracy of Scout rankings? Or maybe you were agreeing with me? Can't tell…

I can't figure out why he thinks this upcoming class is NOT McElwain's 3rd recruiting class. Because he got a late start on his first class it really doesn't count? How stupid is that? I saw Kirby Smart coach in the National Championship game and still pull in an impressive class (much more so than McElwain has pulled in 2 years), I saw Harbaugh dust our ass on the recruiting trail also. Those are just 2 examples of brand new head coaches in the last 2 years that didn't need the same excuses everyone is using for our coaching staff's recruiting failures.

You are a sunshine pumper bc you aren't interested in facts and reality, just belief and hope. Here's the facts, while our class was solid offensively, it was severely lacking in the two most largest positions of need, DT and LB. we got no DTs, none, and the one we had spurned us the day of for our biggest rival. The best we got at LB was a 3* who while probably being a decent player has a low probability of being an impact one, further as much as talent was needed at the spot, depth was equal if not more important, didn't get there. We have any injuries at all in either of those two spots this year, or a key one or two players we are crossing our fingers about for this upcoming season don't pan out the way we hoped they would and we will see defensively something similar to what we saw offensively last year. You even made the comment "with a defense just as good as last years" but you have not one bit of actual evidence to back that up, just hope and optimism. What I know is that we lost key players at already thin positions and we didn't even maintain our thin levels, we got thinner. Believe whatever you want, but the facts are the facts, and the facts are in the game right now you MUST have depth and talent to win at a high level. Good coaching alone won't get you there. Right now we are lagging quite a bit behind our rivals and every single major school in our region on the recruiting trail, even freakin miamuuhhh. That's a problem. Florida should be in the running for a top 5 class each year just based off what is in our backyard. We haven't even been top 10. Mac might be a great game and X and Os guy but we have to recruit better and according to need.

Yep. And I failed to mention Richt at Miami. He salvaged a composite #21 ranked class (higher than McElwain's first class).

I don't want to bash McElwain too bad here, but I think most of us realize he needs to take it up a notch or two. As Durty pointed out, there were some big time failures on the defensive side of the ball....and it's going to cost us in 2017, 18 and beyond if it's not corrected immediately. The 2 classes weren't "bad" by any means....but they were not (overall) very good. They were very similar to the classes Butch Jones has signed at UT since he's been there (a lot of 3 stars, w/ just enough 4-stars to look respectable).

We are lined up for some crazy top talent this year. This is the year. If he cannot do it this year he can't do it any year.
