A QB coach gives positive reviews for LDR, so of course we're hanging on every word of optimism. Agree it might be excessive hype... However, I'm looking for smart, solid play, not heisman level stuff.
Yep and both evaluations (that NFL scout also) seem to think most things are good except they don't like him not stepping into his throws much. If that is his only real issue now in their opinion he should do pretty good.

To be far, Leak didn't get 3,000 yards his freshman season because he didn't play the first half and his last two years were ruined by a retarded OC who wanted him to run the option.

LDR was one throw from PERFECT. And everyone said he was the best QB in camp LAST year. Yeah, we know. LDR transferred away from Retard Half-Kiff and from Oreygone State when they hired an option OC.
I'm very excited about Luke del Rio myself but didn't Oregon state hire mclewain's oc from Colorado state?

Hey, I appreciate the honesty. Saying he's better than Grier, a 5 star? Just because that's what we have...it's the same old story over and over. I get it. It is natural to overhype over guys. But I really feel that's lead to some unrealistic expectations in recent years. LDR is the 2nd best QB in the SEC. Someone actually posted that. How many games has he started? I mean come on. Sure, hate on me for saying the obvious.

There's nothing wrong with some realistic observations. It's better to be pleasantly surprised than seriously let down.

Do we all hope he plays well? Of course. But some of the talk is a little over the top.

Truth is, we don't know. We hope and we know what it seems like it will be based on the current information, but that's it, hope. I'll take it at this point.

Exactly. Do you believe he's the second best QB in the sec?

I get the feeling Del Rio will be the second best QB in the SEC (Kelly being 1st) by years end. I never have nor will I ever be sold on Dobbs. It is a shame he chose UT to play quarterback. He could have been a top draft pick had he gone someplace with an actual coach.
Maybe not as a QB. He doesn't seem to have the passing IQ. But, Butch is a draw back to development, even if he does have all those off season national championships. Good news about Del Rio's effort to improve. I liked the way he got rid of the ball in the spring along with the accuracy. "he's got high hopes."

We have a huge upside with LDR. He just has to remember that we need reliable, solid, and dependable QB play. He doesn't have to be all world from the first snap. Mac had similar situations with McElroy and McCarron early in their careers. Be stable, get comfortable, and the confidence came right along. I can see Mac doing the same thing here. I feel we'll all be pleasantly surprised.

I want to be high on LDR, but can we wait until there are real defenses he is playing against, before we start saying he will be the second best qb in the SEC?

After seeing the title thread I'm just relieved that he's not transferring again.....
I agree with what you're saying here. I was almost shocked by how well he played in the spring game, but most of the pass plays we ran seemed to be kinda quick hitters with maybe 2 options. It'll be interesting to see how he does around the mid season point once teams have some tape on him and the types of plays he runs well. Unlike some other QB's he won't be able to do much for us with his feet, not that I really want a running QB, but there are times when picking up a first down or 2 during a tight game can be a valuable asset for a offense.

I hope he didn't get too close to Dobbs. I'd hate for him to catch anything.

I feel like we are really overstating Luke Del Rio. This guy was only a walk on QB coming out of high school. 687th overall. Yeah, yeah...another diamond in the rough. Got it.

(insert several examples of walk ons going pro here)

Third school is a charm.

PS I am going to hear about how Oregon St went to a running offense, right? Wouldn't the incoming coach KNOW he had a stud QB and tailor an offense around him?

Like Urban Meyer did with Brantley?

Mac and crew do a good job of getting guys open. If we improve our oline play, we should be fine.

The Spring Game did what it was supposed to do, quell fears that we have another Treon. But we don't know what the defense was truly allowed to run, and it was against guys who we hope don't see a lot of time on the field in the Fall. The game, especially the beginning of the game was scripted much like it was in 2010 for Brantley. Once we have to start game planning against a team that is out to actually stop our offense I'll feel a bit better.

Not to say the kid didn't look great, he did. But much like Grier last year, he would have had to fallen on his face to look bad. He was better than expected it's hard to complete that percentage of passes in stride against air, much less a defense that is kinda of there. The question because like Crete says, in week 6-7 when teams have film on him, what is going to be his reaction.

That's a big "if". I'm worried he'll stand in the pocket and get de-cleated by a blitzing LB that Riles or one of the other underachievers on that OL allow to get through. He needs to stay healthy....and get rid of the ball quickly. Those quick passes will need to be a staple until the OL improves - which hopefully happens once they get a few starts under their belt. Again, the UT game is going to be huge....and Kentucky will be a good test prior to that game. The schedule sets up well for allowing the team to gel and set the lineup before we head to Tennessee for game 4.
