The Gators first offensive play of the Outback Bowl

Powell goes into motion across the line leaving 3 receivers at the left of the formation and 2 on the right. Iowa rushes 5 and drops 6 into coverage. The line protects the pocket well. Cleveland goes deep hoping to take defenders and clear out space for the underneath receivers. RB Scarlett and TE Lewis both run short routes. It appears that the play was designed to get Scarlett the ball in space with a matchup against a smaller CB, but Appleby gets rid of the ball fast and throws to Lewis. Lewis has a mismatch against a LB, but the ball is thrown high and behind. Iowa's defense covered this play well, but if the ball is thrown on target Lewis picks up at least 5 yards. If the ball is thrown on target to Scarlett it probably gets at least 8 yards.

The next play

Scarlett finds the intended hole, but it appears there was a lot of empty room on the left side of the formation that he didn't notice. Sharpe gets a nice push on the DE, but he fails to turn the block outside. The DE waits for Scarlett to hit the hole and grabs him. The LB and DB finish it off. The OL got a nice push off the line of scrimmage and Powell was in place to block the second level. If Scarlett cuts to the left of Sharpe instead of going inside this one could have been a big gainer. I think Scarlett ran the play as called and just didn't have the vision to see the cut.

We show Iowa a non-standard formation and they struggle with it. Iowa rushes 5 and they stunt on the right side of the line. Our line blocks beautifully. TE Lewis picks up the linebacker who appears to think a screen is coming. Sharpe pancakes the DL when his feet get tangled up with Lewis. Scarlett maintains his position looking for someone to block. The blocking scheme could not have worked better. Powell leaves the line first and runs deep attracting the safety to him. Cleveland follows and gets man coverage that he easily beats. With a clean pocket and no pressure Appleby steps up and throws a nice pass right into the chest of the receiver.

Next play, same drive

This is a passing play and Scarlett will not have a blocking assignment. To help keep the pocket clean we bring in 7 blockers on the line of scrimmage. After the snap Scarlett rolls over into the flat and the LB shadows him. Cleveland goes deep down the right sideline and Callaway goes deep down the left hash. Callaway easily gets past the CB. Overall the line blocks well except Jawaan Taylor who lets the DL get by him, but fortunately the DL falls down. Appleby is able to get the ball off cleanly and Callaway has two steps on the CB, but the ball is thrown long and outside. If Appleby puts that ball on the inside Callaway may have been able to get it. This play should have been a TD.

We had been running up the middle so we tried to mix it up and pitch to Powell around the outside. If the blocking can seal the corner then Powell would have just the safety to beat and empty space to the end zone. However, we didn't seal the corner. Sharpe is the guard on the far side of the formation. He pulls and sprints across the field to block the CB. It's not a pretty block, but it was effective. The rest of the line tries to block everyone inside away from the play. Fullwood tries to block a linebacker and barely slows him down. Goolsby struggles just as much in his blocking attempt. The Iowa defenders were able to push far enough towards the sideline that only a narrow lane is left for Powell to run through. The safety flies up and fills the lane easily. The idea was to get Powell in a one on one in space. It didn't work. To make it worse Martez Ivey grabs a defender around the upper torso and draws a well deserved holding penalty.

We try to go downfield again. The play calling has been aggressive and if we could connect on the downfield passes it would make it harder for Iowa to defend the run. It's 2nd and 20, Thompson is the RB and we have 4 receivers on the field. This is obviously going to be a pass play or some type of draw. Before the snap Powell goes into motion and evens the formation with 2 WRs on the left and a WR and TE on the right. Iowa only rushes 4 and Thompson immediately rolls out to the sideline. Iowa is willing to give up the underneath pass and we literally have receivers running open all over the field. The line protects the pocket well and Appleby is able to survey the field. He chooses to throw downfield to Fullwood who is open. However, for some reason Fullwood stutters when the ball is in the air. He appeared to misjudge the ball and slow down momentarily. Then he ends up stretching out for the ball and allows the defender to make the play. If he keeps running and uses his body to block out the defender he has a decent shot at that ball. The ball was not placed perfectly, but it was catchable. It was just a poor effort on the part of Fullwood.

We can't expect perfect execution on every single play. No team does that. I agree that Fulwood's effort was weak on that interception, but why are you sending a guy long who has rarley used his body or size to make a play.

Iowa's defense was also good. They did make good plays early and filled holes. Even the pass Appleby hits on that drive had to be thrown into a tight window. I give Iowa some credit on that drive.

Let's not get carried away w/ the 30-3 win. It was a great win and gives us a lot of momentum.

There are still major offensive issues.

We averaged 345 ypg this season, ranking us 115th in the country. We gained LESS than that vs. Iowa. The offense had the one long 80 yard drive....and the one 85 yard TD. Otherwise, the D either scored or put the O in position to score.

Bottom line; we need a QB.

Just like in the SEC Championship game they threw up a 50/50 ball to Fullwood and of course he got outmuscled for the ball. Why not throw that pass up to Cleveland? Makes no damn sense. What a bust Fullwood was, glad he's gone.

Mac from day one had been critical of Fullwood, saying he a 6'4" guy that plays like he's 5'9". But hell he's still playing his butt. Mac should've cut this guy loose after last year. Saban would've never let this guy tie up a scholarship for this long. It's cutthroat, but nice guys finish last in this business.

I'm not trying to defend it, but I know the reason why he's still in the game.

He's our best blocking receiver.

If we only put him in on running plays, it would be a tell. So we have to let him play some passing downs as well. Why do we actually throw the ball to him? That I can't answer.
