Shaw's a great coach but seems to have stagnated. He's a Stanford guy, anyway. I don't see him leaving for any other job.

So what's the most we offer Frost? Do we go to $6.5M to allegedly match Nebraska? Would we go to $7M for anybody?

There is a point where money won't be what makes the difference. Either Frost wants to be at UF because he recognizes it is a better opportunity than Nebraska or he wants to go coach where he played. I don't think a less than 10% pay difference is going to be what makes him choose one over the other. I also don't want to get in a bidding war.

I really like Frost and I hope he is the guy, but paying him $6.5 million when he has never coached in a power 5 conference seems crazy. $3-4 million and give him incentives and raises when he performs well. He hasn't proven himself at the highest level yet...

Maybe that's why I'm not impressed. His tenure has been relatively boring on a national scale.
That would be the East Coast bias. I'm not sure this entire side of the country realizes another football team not named USC even exists on that coast.

He's definitely done some good things and only had one truly "bad" season, but he's always got one WTF loss every year. And he frequently relies on one complete stud player on offense to score points. If that player is shut down or injured, they don't score.

You're not getting a good P5 coach for less than 4 these days. That should be the base salary. 3 million gets you the Jim McElwain's of the world.

Agreed. And don't want a guy who's chasing the highest paycheck. But UCF can pay $3.5M and Nebraska will allegedly offer $6.5M. If that's true do we match it? If he's the guy then we pay what it takes. I'm really not interested in going to 3rd or 4th on our list again.

It would be reasonable for the contract to be incentive laced. Or even to be something like $4M year one, $5M year two, $6M year three. But it don't work that way and agents do the negotiating and they're gonna get as much as they can. Maybe, hopefully, since Frost's agent is Trace Armstrong he steers Frost away from going after just the highest paycheck. Wishful thinking.

I think UF should have a coach that is worth $6.5M a year. So going after bargain basement hires doesn't interest me. Go big or go home.

The Nebraska allegation is a made up price.

I do however think we will sign Frost for no less than 4.5, if not 5 mil for the first season and it will go up every year after that.

Would Willingham leave Utah? Haven't seen his name mentioned.

Whittingham is the coach at Utah (Kyle). Tyrone Willingham was a slightly above average coach who had some pretty good HCing gigs: Stanford, Washington, and ND.

I'd be willing to take Bob Stoops....if he could get Lincoln Riley to come be the OC, and "HC in Waiting". J/K, I wish the Stoops talk would die down.

This is my thought as well, we'll offer him the same or slightly more than what McElwain was making. It's certainly fair (hell, it's more than fair - but to avoid a bidding war, we'll probably have to offer 4.5-5). If we see his salary anywhere near (or over) 6 million and we do sign him on as HC, we'll know that Nebraska made a ridiculous offer and we had to match it.

I apologize if this has been said already, but I haven’t had a chance to read the last 11 pages of this thread but I felt compelled to chime in.

The point I want to make is that if Gundy can’t dominate the Big 12, he’s not going to dominate the SEC either. And that goes for any coach. No one is going to miraculously win at UF just because we have better athletes to recruit here. I want a coach that can dominate the SEC like Spurrier did and like Saban does now. Spurrier won the ACC, Meyer won big at Utah. A great coach will win anywhere. And coaches like Gundy will always win 9 or 10 games but rarely win the conference or beats their big rivals.
