Do you think Mullen would win at UF?

Just in case anyone thought my opinion has changed since Mac is gone and Mullen beat A&M

You give him too much credit. First off, Tebow coming to UF had nothing to do with Mullen. I'm pretty sure Tebow said in his book that they didn't have a close relationship like he did with Meyer. Newton, barely played for him, and Mullen couldn't get him to Miss St. I don't think Newton should count. Prescott is legit, and Fitzgerald isn't 245 so that's why they've been blown out twice so far. Miss St will probably finish 8-4 this year, which is OK but nothing special.

Like others have said, Mullen would have some decent seasons with the right QB, but no championships.

You also discount what he does with an entire team made up of probably +90% players from just the state of Mississippi. What he’s managing to do there, against the teams he’s doing it against in the West division, is nothing short of miraculous. Like him or not as a UF coach, you’re lying to yourself to discount him & what he is doing where he is doing it.

For someone who said, "I don't want Mullen" and "I don't care for Mullen," you sure do seem like you're hoping he's the next coach as much as you defend him.
I don't like him personally and am a little ashamed to form such an opinion on little data. I also give some credence to the notion that he wouldn't win championships. I do think that he would consistently win 10 or 11 games a year at UF.
I also worry that we have sunk so low that we might need a good but not great coach to stabilize the program be at this point.

Here's a fun thread from a month ago.....

Some good reading!

Great bump. I think this thread should be stickied to the top of the board to be reviewed from time to time in the Mullen era.

BTW, I agree with the majority sentiment in the thread.

I think most Gator fans are loyal to the university being lifelong supporters (not bandwagon fans) of our beloved team no matter the coach.

Though I was not thrilled with the Mullen hire, he's the coach of my Gators so I will support him until he gives me reason for that support to erode.

I will give him the benefit of the doubt, hoping he is able to return this program to an elite level.

he lost too terrible SEC teams frequently and lost twice to Minor conference cupcakes.

just a little reality check for some of you that are living in an alternate universe.

We shall see. Mullen is not my choice, but having been hired, I say, give him a chance. He has the same problem our last two coaches have had, he has to have a QB.

Great bump. I just reread this whole thing. Man, what a pendulum swing for some of these folks. Good times.

That's the nature of these things. One minute we love someone, the next they're the worst human beings on the planet. And every now and then, that person gets a chance to come full circle and be whatever he was originally again.

I'll stand by my original post and rationale. He wasn't my first choice, but I don't think he's a bad choice. The notion that he has to have the "freak of nature" QB is overstated, considering in the past 10 years, he's personally had 4 that fit his system perfectly. I'd also point out that we often forget(or try to at least) the stretch from the end of Wuerffel to the rise of Grossman. I don't care what your system is, you need the right QB or you're not winning anything of consequence. DM is not unique in that regard. I also saw something about Burton and Reed? Not sure the relevance there considering he was long gone by then. I get it though. When it's been bad, it all tends to bleed together.

The last two coaches had five 4-star QBs, more than SOS had over 12 years. SOS won big with walkons at QB. CUM won a NC at UOHSC with a third string QB.

They both would have won big with what we had.

The problem with the last two regimes was coaching, 100%.

Not arguing. Who do we have now that Mullen can win with? Maybe Corral If he stays. If you are saying he doesn't need a QB, then name who he has that will win in his offense.

Not Corral IMO. I fully expect him to go elsewhere. if he stays I don't think he will do much. Branteyish, skill sets all wrong for an option offense.

Franks, maybe, #17 and a few others at wildcat, and freshmen that we sign soon.

No one thought Shane Matthews suspended for gambling with a bookie in Athens, GA. in the fall of 1989 was really setting himself up to be a two time SEC player of the year and to have a nice NFL career as a backup making money. But then there was a coaching change and he was allowed off suspension and he rose to the top. With good coaching things will change quickly. Now the only question is did UF finally hire a good enough coach?
