How much do you tip a losing football coach on the way out the door?
The service was poor. The food was terrible....
about 12 Million or 50% of the total already paid.
Fuchs that!

I've noticed that in the poll, no one answered "Don't tip ever" or even "5-10%". Is this because we have no cheapskates here or are they just too ashamed to admit it?

I don't. Tips are for people who bring me my food at my table, or at my home via delivery. My fetching it from the counter means the tip goes in my pocket.

a lot of people are very generous on take out and drive through orders. Our son is 16 and works for a pizza chain. He can make $25 an hour including tips some nights.

How about carside? They had to take your order, make sure they got the extra sauce, dressing on the side, drinks, put it all in the bag with your free bread, plasticware and napkins, etc., and carry it out to your car.

They don't refill your drinks or clear your table, but they do pretty much everything else a waitress would do at a sit-down restaurant.

I've been told 10% is reasonable for that service.

I didn’t used to. When people quit going to work the last few years and taking Covid welfare instead I tipped on to go orders to say thanks for being there instead of being just another draw on the system. I used to tip $2-4 bucks per order but have been doing 15 to 20 percent now. As everyone comes back to work I'll drop it backdown.

Based on government standards regarding taxes, take all the money you have in your wallet, give it to the server and he/she will give back what is inappropriate.

How about when ordering a bottle of wine? The mark up is pretty high on wine bottles for restaurants so do you tip on the bottle or just the food cost?

Don't remember who but one of those people that write books cause they believe they have some pretensious profession that needs to be taught to us, like Martha Stewart or someone, once said that tips are for table wait service on the food only.

My results may vary based on my mood, my appreciation or her looks.

I was going to ask this..glad you did. I tip a max of 15% overall in that situation even though i think it’s too much if you bought an overpriced wine already.

I’ve found myself tipping well over 20% lately, when my wife asked why the big tip I just said she came to work, a lot of restaurants can’t find anyone to come in.

How about carside?

Where I am, there are damn few carside places. We have Sonic locations, but not enough staff to run food so it is drive-thru only. There are 2-3 local joints you can park at and get car service. I don't go to those, typically because they are absolutely slammed with customers most of the time. I would consider tipping, but smaller, in these situations.

Fair points. And I do appreciate those willing to go to work. So yeah, I'll keep this in mind.

tips are for table wait service on the food only

Unless the staff are kick ass wine corner-sewers and able to impress me a lot....let me stop there, I don't like wine. I'll shift gears, and say beer-alcohol, as those are more likely to show up on my bill. Yeah, I'd tip to cover those, though they are notably less than wine. Especially considering beer-alcohol don't get on my tab but once in a blue moon, and even then it is only one or two drinks.

What I would like to add to the bit your 'expert' provided is that the tip is to be for the FULL amount of the food. So, when you've got coupons or some discount applied, the tip should be over the FULL amount, not the smaller amount. The restuarant is giving you a discount on the meal, the waiter didn't ask for or offer any sort of 'less service' in this arrangement.
