Jaren Handy and Byron Young are both delaying their signings to take visits. Thought we’d land one of the two or Bogle

And that's why, unless there are grade concerns, you don't pull a scholly from a 3* to replace them with a higher rated prospect. Unless of course you're Bama.

It happens every year. The coach can threaten to ban all he want, but UL will be greeted with open arms there for the next kid he has that is maybe good enough for UL but not say good enough for UF or UTx etc. Unless the coach is a fool, he will not screw over his future players because a school had a change in staffs and the new staff wanted to go in another direction.

You really don't want to piss off a powerful HS coach at a powerhouse program. You treat them very nicely, hand them some money under the table like Bama does and like Auburn used to do at a certain high school in Ft Lauderdale, you encourage certain graduates to donate new sod or donate generously at the fundraiser. Maybe HS coaches are not as powerful in Florida as they are in Texas but they can certain push certain kids to Bama...(cough) Jeudy (cough).

C'mon Donk. You have to admit. If this was butters the blue chippers wouldn't even be looking at us this late and we'd be talking about 3* diamonds in the rough right now (or 4* future armed robbery suspects). We are in play with a lot of talent and I can't help but think were gonna land some big fish.

This is literally no different than every Butters year when we were going to flip Bammers linebackers (both) or the year before when we were going to flip both Meatchikn LBs, Ugly's five star QB etc.

In fact, showing up a week before signing day is another thing which is identical to Butters.

How many of these "big fish" are you thinking we catch? I think zero of the current Barn, Bammer commits and 30% of our targets with four hats on the table.

To be clear, I'm not saying things couldn't be better, nor am I against making some changes in the recruiting staff we have. We need to upgrade at several positions.

That said, in the cases of the names Slevin mentioned, both were committed to their respective schools by early July. That means that they'd done at least some of their visits and camps, met with coaches and decided long before that. In the case of Handy, the Au pledge was after he decommitted from Lsu in March. So when these kids were seriously mapping out their future, we had a guy humping sharks and fabricating stories on during a 4-7 campaign. I'm not blindly defending Mullen and Co. As I said, we should look for upgrades. But between the comments from the OL flip a few weeks ago, and the way the '20 class is setting up, I think clearly we'd slipped to a level that isn't easily corrected. It wasn't just wins and losses. The kids hated our coaches, and we're still playing catch up with many of these guys as a result.

Now, I get that some coaches can, and sometimes do, rewrite things immediately. They're just that good at recruiting. We don't have that. But as I said, I think the staff is doing a pretty good job of getting some of these bigger names to at least not end things now, so we can get our foot in the door. And I'm still hopeful we have a class that's better than what we're expecting at present. If not, heads rolling wouldn't bother me at all.

Yeah, I'm pretty bullish on us being able to land another 6 or so 4* players. It won't be an elite class, but I'm pretty hopeful we will upgrade our depth of talent all over the field. I think we will enter the 2019 season as a more talented team overall than we were in 2018.

I still have some concerns that we're not upgrading as quickly as we need to, and that we're not making as big of upgrades as we need to. But at least it feels like we're moving in the right direction.

You might do all those things. You might take a player you don't like as a knew coach if he is at high school that annually produces top players you need. But the bottom line and what was being discussed in my post is that EVERY SINGLE YEAR new coaches come in and dump recruits that the prior staff had offered and taken commitments from.

Further no coach who wants to do his job will try to prevent UL from recruiting one of his players. You are doing a disservice to your player and NOT DOING YOUR JOB if you pull such a stunt. A coach however may warn his player not to fully trust what you hear from UL, but a smart high school coach tells his players to be careful about any promise made in recruiting.

This is likely the high end of our potential. Behind five or six SEC schools and Clowns.

Well, this just wont be the case. Next year we fight and die w what we have. Last years class fizzled after that surprising ESD and Im not sure how many new faces contribute. Almost none of the 2019 class will contribute much next year.

We will have a new OL. Hopefully a year extra S&C will help but the second teamers looked like shyt this year.

This bump class is important. It will largely determine if Mullins makes it past year 3 or 4.

He wont last if he goes with the "oh well, I cant recruit until you build me facilties in 2025 or later" theory.

If you don’t believe coaches will sour on a school, you haven’t been paying attention to what’s happened at UF. Meyer, Muschamp and McElwain have all burned bridges at schools. Hell look at us in Jax. We get next to nothing for just not talking to the guys. What happens when you seriously piss a coach off? If a kid is good enough for UL to offer, he’s got other significant offers.

You may be correct on this one, but right or wrong, I think that this is the key question. Mullens can get by (imo) with only small talent upgrades, but he must upgrade at least a little bit.
