It's not a difficult decision to cancel the season if nobody will play you.

NCAA rules :
  • All student-athletes must be allowed to opt out of participation due to concerns about contracting COVID-19. If a college athlete chooses to opt out, that individual’s athletics scholarship commitment must be honored by the college or university.

If this is true, it's complete BS! If you don't play, you shouldn't get paid imo. No room. No board. No meals. No team facilities. No tuition. Nothing. You made a commitment to the school and team in return for services. You renege on your part of the deal, the deal is off! Or damn well should be.

Mountain West: The Mountain West has approved an 8-game schedule plus two non-conference games, beginning the weekend of Sept. 26. The conference championship will be held Dec. 5, 12 or 19, as has become standard across FBS.

Not that Maryland got a lot of fans, but this the state of Maryland (politicians) have lost their damn minds over the China virus:

Maryland: The Terps are preparing to begin the season with no fans in attendance, under guidance from the local health department and will not have season tickets for the 2020 season.

Could you imagine the backlash if UF did this?

I live in the DC area (Arlington, VA) and there's a school district, Montgomery County (MD), that is trying to force private schools to remained closed in the fall - against the Governor's orders. It's a complete sh*tshow. The response to the China virus is the dem's new hoax!! Children need to be in school! And there's no need to have an empty 60,000 seat stadium if we can all go to restaurants, Walmart, the beach, etc. But they still have schools and churches closed down up here.

College football without fans is completely pointless. Playing in silence? Just cancel the damn season!

Now guys, if you scream certain slogans the virus does not effect you, in fact, it lessens the virus. I mean sure if you look at a graph you can pinpoint rising cases after two weeks of specific nationwide events and the like, but it actually lessened the issue...right?

I agree, but they are going to promote it and fight tooth-and- nail to get some semblance of a season to be played.
The question is why?
And there is also the question of bringing students back to campus. If students are not coming back to campus, and there will be no attendance permitted at games, then what is the point?
I think the biggest issue is eligibility; if players are allowed to sit out the season and afforded another year of eligibility, then there is no point in playing the games.
The only solution that makes sense is to play whatever schedule possible, and if a player opts out then they lose a year of eligibility. If a player tests positive for Covid19, and they miss more than 2 games, then they can apply for a medical redshirt.
It really depends on how many games will ultimately be played, and nobody knows that for sure.
But if a player opts out without being tested positive, then they should keep their scholarship but lose a year of eligibility.
Of course that will probably never happen, but it would at least solve some of the issues. There needs to be a compromise on both sides.
However, I don't see how we can have a season if one player tests positive and the entire team has to quarantine for two weeks. In that event, chances are that the entire season will be cancelled.

Penn State joins other B10 teams:

Penn State: The Nittany Lions have announced that under current conditions there will be no fans in the stands at Beaver Stadium this fall.

Tulane ain't skeerd of no China virus!!

Tulane has added games with South Alabama (Sept. 12) and Southern Miss (Sept. 26) to its schedule. The additions bring the Wave’s schedule back to 12 games.

BYU at Navy: BYU and Navy will meet Monday, Sept. 7 in Annapolis for a game to be televised by ESPN. These teams have only met twice previously.

This is interesting:

Middle Tennessee-Troy: Middle Tennessee and Troy have lined up an in-season home-and-home to replace lost games elsewhere. The teams, which were not originally scheduled to play this season, will meet Sept. 5 or 19 at MTSU and Nov. 21 at Troy.

Fellas, consider baseball's downright hysterical response to the Marlins and other positive tests. And mind you, these are test results - not necessarily full-blown symptoms. Further, keep in mind that baseball does allow for some measure of social distancing.

Now, ponder the very nature of football. Guys huddle and line up in each other's faces. They collide, tackle and sweat all over each other.

Add to the equation that Divisions 2 and 3 have cancelled fall sports championships and the avalanche of COVID litigation already underway.

Now, I get that there's a crap ton of money involved, but given the irrational response to this pandemic; considering that merely testing positive while not feeling sick or exhibiting symptoms is grounds for sidelining whole teams. Add to that the mental gymnastics required to argue that somehow the health, safety and even lives of kids playing D1 ball is valued differently than kids playing D2 and D3 sports - lower apparently...all this adds up to we ain't having college football this season.
