Best College Quarterback of All Time

Forgot that Bush won the Heisman in 05.

Really, it only strengths the argument that the list is a total joke.

If you want to compile a "best single season for a 2000s QB"...an undefeated season with a national championship and impressive stat line should be at or near the top.

But if we're going to argue best 2000s college QBs, then career numbers like titles, individual accolades, and finally, stats come into play; and on every front, Tebow beats 2 of the 3 in front of him.

Only Mayfield has an argument for being better on the stat sheet (not in titles or accolades)...and even that is only on career passing numbers. Broken down, in things like average yards per attempt and college QB passer rating, the two are fairly equal.

Cam plays ONE SEASON of college football and he is ranked second?

If the metric is for one season then why have they listed the career accomplishments next to their names?

The further away we move from Tebow’s career the more people try to diminish it because of his poor pro career. The list is supposed to be about college only.

Sports Journalism is completely dead.

Lot of guys on that list did not have very good pro careers. Your point about Cam is a good one. Makes one wonder if they even had a metric or just went with "feelings."

Some of the stuff from my posts was off memory; some was literally less than 5 minutes worth of googling.

One would expect a sports journalist--whose literal job is to keep track of sports--would be able to do better.

The main sports forum is dominated by birthday threads and dead running backs. I thought this might help inject some needed life into the place.

Tebow at #4.

Mayfield I don't know much about really. Meh
Vince Young can't read.
Burrow had one great year.
Scam Newton had Nick Fairley. For the impact that Fairley had, look at the 2010 Iron Bowl. Fairley was suspended for the first half in which Bama was leading big. 2nd half, Fairley almost single handedly shut them down.
Tebow dominated his last 3 years at UF and should have won the Heisman in 2008. Brafford couldn't hold Tim's jock cup.

Tebow faced 2 Top 10 defenses that season and 5 of the Top 20. Bradford only faced one Top 10/20 defense: TCU.

Tebow played 10 games vs Top 50 defenses, Bradford 3. McCoy (who finished 2nd) played 0.

He got the last laugh in the title game, but I think if the voting had been done after the bowl game, everyone knew the wrong guy won the trophy.

Tom Brady played 23 seasons. Most good NFL quarterbacks are around for at least 10. College compresses the work of art into five years tops if you assume a redshirt season. But let's be honest. Most really good quarterbacks these days aren't going to be around that long.

That leads to varying interpretations of what is greatness.

Is it a sustained period of excellence like Tebow, Mayfield or Leinart. Is it a quick nuclear strike like Newton, Burrow or Murray?

Sustained excellence is much, much harder to achieve than a one-hit wonder.

Defenses adjust as you give them more tape to identify strengths & weaknesses--and the best players adjust along with it.

Brady went from being a game manager type to a true downfield passing QB to a master of the short and midrange game.

Tebow's numbers declined as he went from trying to do it all (2007) to being more of a balanced threat that looked for multiple ways to beat you in 08 and 09. And let's face it: in 06 and 07, he was a "one read and go" kinda guy...then started adding in a few wrinkles and additional reads in later seasons.

Just catching up here. Bernie, Gator J and MJM make the best points. Durty has the best macro advice. And Maheo gets the comedy award. In general though, this thread sucks.
