Scholarships are awarded every day based on how much money you make. Heck, that's the only factor in awarding federal scholarships. Most private scholarships are need based as well.

Doesn't UF and a lot of other schools give out full rides almost for National Merit Scholars? I think that would be a better comparison to a football one.

Nothing wrong to want to earn your way on your own steam and not rely on daddy for everything. Hard to fault him for that.
