It is a gdmmm shame on a gator board I have to argue about the greatness of Emmitt fckn Smith the ALL TIME LEADING RUSHER IN THE NFL and the greatest RB in gator history and get so much kickback. .....And if we give him too much recognition there a 100 other gator greats that get it, too. Uh NO!! Emmitt is the only gator that didnt play QB you call by his FIRST name......he is that iconic. Percy was great but did you see Wes Chandler. His pro career was very good too. Emmitt came to Fla and gave us as many years as many other stars. Did he have rings and hardware? No but that mofo gave us something we had never seen on Fla field. A RB for the ages.........and the NFL saw it too. And btw his character was and is above reproach. He could have gone anywhere out of HS and at programs not nearly as down as us but he came here. I never saw a RB on Fla field that was as exciting to watch.

Apparently it is for role models in need.No Heisman? No statue. Too bad, so sad. This is coming from a guy who was a huge Emmitt Smith fan growing up. Is it really so wrong to have standards and force people to live up to those standards in order to reap the rewards of said standards?
This brings up an interesting point. So abiding by the present criteria a defensive player can never have a statute at UF.All of the statues are Heisman winning qb's (obviously). So if you want to change the criteria, how about a statue for a defensive player? Wilbur Marshall for example.

How about abiding by the current criteria if a player here won the Heisman as sleazy as Winston, he gets a statute.
Why does everything have to be decided by outdated rules and regulations. We can't trust ourselves to make decisions like this on a case by case basis?
I remember when we first heard they may name Florida field after SOS it was stated it couldn't be done because it had already been dedicated to the fallen soldiers of
WW l, but guess what the board of trustees did it anyway. Why? Because it was time, and things change. I just can't see why this riles people so. Emmitt is a football icon and he is ours, and if he had a statute the first place I would go the first Saturday in September would there so my sons and grandsons and I could have our picture taken with it.
rules is rules.........rules never go outdated. Everything is static. Change is bad (scary). This is why all shots in basketball are two points. Why negro league ball players cant get into the HOF. It is why the SEC is still 10 teams. It is why you can still use your helmet like a weapon. Why Like Ox said. Lets go back to the 50s when the world was better...........I guess he is a traitor about the dwag and the speech stuff. Sorta like old Urban who only left us (MYGOD THE ANGUISH) with just two national titles...........Why does everything have to be decided by outdated rules and regulations. We can't trust ourselves to make decisions like this on a case by case basis?
I’d feel better about giving him a statue if he would have even hinted in his Hall of Fame speech that he was a Gator. Thanked everyone from his high school coach to his father-in-law but not a word about the University that helped him make the NFL. Yes, he apologized about it the next day and said it was an honest mistake but I’m still not buying it. Beautiful speech and obviously a lot of thought went into it.,just didn’t think enough of his time here to include it.

Exactly on everything you said. Statues are really for dead people so we can argue 150 years later over them. The Bama game made us legit even before Steve came on board. I think that game put Emmitt on the cover of SI. I have said everything about Emmitt that I need to say but g8trwood (keep those doors locked) nailed it perfectly. In general I think statutes are stupid, but Emmit is clearly the greatest gator football player for his career. If the statutes are for football greatness...... Didn’t he run for over 200 yards in his first game on the field, in Alabama? Hell that should be its own statute :) for playing less than 3 full seasons, his numbers are pretty darn good.
What next...erecting statutes for transgenders. Don’t they need role models, too?
NoHe's in the Ring of Honor, so his name and number will always be on that stadium. Is that not enough recognition?
