Joe’s Deli was the first restaurant I ever ate at in Gainesville. Mrs G and I went there when we were dating. Had to be ‘90 or ‘91. Best as I can remember it was on 13th, near Shands. Does that sound right or am I mixing it up with somewhere else?
That was the original one on 13th (past archer road turn off) and 16th that has a taco bell on the old lot

That makes sense as it wasn’t too far from Mrs G’s old sorority house. She was a big fan (I thought it was pretty good too the few times I went there) and was crushed when it closed.

I actually tie the fall of our football program to the "twin days of doom" when UF banned re-entry to the stadium (killing the half time tradition of running across the street to Joe's on University for alcohol) and then the City of Gainesville banned gameday outdoor tent on the side of Joe's... that's what killed the Joe's on University which led to the inevitable, no longer able to subsidize, death of the original one on 13th...

I still dispute whether one existed on 34th Street in the Kash 'n Karry plaza. If it did exist, BNA killed it.

Have you eaten at his place? I think we’ve discussed this before but not sure. But for someone like you who remembers all those things, it’s almost a museum.
Interesting story about Visors his upstairs bar, they call it Visors because most of the Visors Spurdog collected along the way are on display there (hundreds).
Some guy that worked there saw us looking at them came over and told us about one of Coaches favorites.
Its a “Air Force One” the story went Coach was in Scotland playing golf with then Prince Charles, George Bush Sr and Sean Connery. Got a ride back on Air Force One and was gifted the Visor.

lol. Mrs G actually worked at Kash ‘n Karry as a cashier. She started at one in St. Pete in HS and worked at that one on breaks from UF and did shifts during the school year at the one on 34th for a few years. (She still gets annoyed at bad baggers in grocery stores today.)

What years would she have been at the 34th St one?

Yes, of course. But it shows a lot about him that he didnt realize he had a goat available and didnt run into Arnsparger's office and demand he reconsider. He doesnt have a clue what a competent football coach is.
Not doubting, but I’m curious as to your source(s) re: Foley’s role. I’d always heard Arnsparger wanted to bring Archer and was overruled by the boosters (including BHG Jr.) but hadn’t heard anything about Foley’s involvement.

Aside: I can’t recall the game/year, but I was there when they were giving BHG, Jr. an award. They handed him the mic and he said, “I’m a Charley Pell man!”

I worked my way through some post-baccalaureate work by building a sales route for a restaurant food & supplies distributor 1985-87. For a time, I managed to get all 3 Joe’s to use my company exclusively. They were owned & managed by 3 brothers who also owned Harry’s in the Oaks Mall. The one who ran 34th was a d*ck.

Having frequented all of them from 1980-87, then going back when I was in town, the food & service fell off pretty badly.

I did love the mural on the ceiling of 13th St.

Foley ran the search committee and was AAD and Arnspargers.primary bootlicker. My source was a guy who worked in the office and who caused Fooley to needlessly stop and talk everytime he saw us. It was in the papers back then too during the search.

The BHG vetoed and demanded SOS was not in the paper but it was common knowledge too.

Archer was fired the next year after another losing season.

Fooley did it all himself for Zook and Chimp, and used a committee for Butterteeth.

Guess who ran the search at Cowbell that resulted in the hire of Dan Dullen? Swishy Scotty.

Foley is a fking idiot. After the 97 lose to LSU Foley got word that a couple of support staff peeps had gone out to the Casino Friday afternoon and supposedly placed bets on LSU to win. When Piller pulled up lame with a HS injury during the game I guess he felt the fix was in and Monday he called all the support staff, trainers and managers up to the conference room in BHG and was interrogating everyone one on one. At some point I guess he realized how dumb he looked and ended it after he had gone through a few people.

There was NO fix and Zach had a bruise on the back of his leg the size of a watermelon from that tear. Maybe he should have asked Doug some questions since he threw 5 pics. There was no fix, we just got beat straight up.
