A few years ago I was feeling cynical about the easy birthday wishes like these and Facebook where people who would never ordinarily remember your birthday wish you a 'cheap' happy birthday. So, I made my birthday private on FB. (I had also messed up something here and it was showing 6/1, not 6/22.) That year happened to be my 40th birthday. ...and our team here had just downsized, and I didn't plan anything, some friends were out of town and my wife and I were, how shall I say, not thriving that day.
It was the loneliest birthday I've ever had with no one to really celebrate it with and nothing to do. I realized that all those 'cheap' birthday wishes have more value than I was giving them credit for and I laughed at my own arrogance that, in part, put me in that situation.
This year I had a great day enjoying friends and family. ...and a three fun, good meals!
